Sam Barrott - Brentford v Crystal Palace

Big talking point in the first half was disallowing a direct
free kick goal from Eze due to an apparent foul by a Palace
player. A disappointing few seconds of refereeing, for me.
Firstly he blew his whistle before the ball entered the net,
thus depriving VAR of being able to assist. And secondly, I’m
not convinced it’s a foul. the Brentford player was equally
guilty of holding but he got the free kick due to falling on the
       ground…
I wouldn’t have been surprised if VAR would’ve recommended an
OFR if Barrott had held his whistle slightly longer.

Quite an interesting firsthalf for the SG1 newbee and, besides
crossing over with Davies for that throw-in close to halftime,
think he has done pretty well. Glad to see that he continues his
approach to foul recognition from last season, only blowing up
when a real offence has occurred (not awarding soft/zero fouls),
and thus keeping the games flowing. Refreshing to see!

Clear offence imo, blatantly worked on in training (replay angle
at like 37' shows it) even notwithstanding the stricter approach
this season with regards blocking at set pieces. It isn't
Barrott's fault that Hughes's offence did nothing to stop the
goal! He simply blew up for a clear foul in front of him. Imo
Barrott has generally done well in the 1H.

Haven’t Barrott (and Bankes) just missed a clear penalty now?
       55’ is the timestamp

Match Centre basically said its wrong and that the only reason
it wasn't overturned was because the whistle was blown before
       the ball hit the net.
       [/quote]
Err, no they haven't. They haven't offered any opinion on the
foul, just what factually happened, and have then just stated a
fact that VAR couldn't get involved as play was stopped before
       the goal was scored.
The referee awards a free-kick to Brentford for a foul by Hughes
on Collins. The whistle was blown before the ball entered the
goal, so VAR cannot intervene and the referee’s call stands.

I agree actually with Mikeal that it looked like a rehearsed
action. Now by the standards in the EPL, was the contact
meaningful, was it enough to impede, did defender go down too
easily I guess who knows sometimes with the PGMOL but in my
view, I don't think VAR should have intervened even if they
could have. Might not be a call we like, but surely that falls
       squarely as a "referees call".

I must say I disagree with the above, it’s not a foul for me and
even if given on field, my belief is that the correct call would
be to overturn it as a clear and obvious error. You may be right
in that they’ve worked on it in training, that seems very
       believable - but it doesn’t make it a foul either. I wouldn’t
class that as blocking, I just don’t think Hughes has initiated
enough of the contact to warrant an offence.
To add to that, Sky’s half time assessment was typically poor
(as has a lot of the broadcasters this week RE VAR/rule changes,
or not changes mostly). Calling Sam Barrott new to the premier
league is a stretch, I get what Kelly Cates was saying in that
he’s new to SG1, but when he’s refereed more top level games
than approx half of SG1 last year, that seems irrelevant. Then
for Micah Richards to follow up that the “new referee” has “had
a stinker” is typical for him, with no insight other than to
       refbash.

Let’s not gloss over it guys, it was a terrible piece of
refereeing, and today for me he lost control and didn’t have
player respect or belief in him.
His been rushed through this new system far too quickly ! ! He
should still be learning in sG2.
His first big game today being a London derby and for me it
showed him seriously out of dept.
Webb needs to bench him for 3/4 weeks now.

I don’t think it’s great - and unfortunately if that had been
other SG1 referees, peoples reaction may have been slightly
       different.
