Any pointers on what to expect from Michael Barlow? Don’t recall
him being one of the officials given FL games last season but in
the middle for Rovers opening game.

AFC Wimbledon (First Team) v Colchester United FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Middleton, Daniel
Assistant Referee: Bennett, Andy
Assistant Referee: Fidler, Ciaran
Fourth Official: Vallance, James
Mostly good from Danny Middleton today at Plough Lane, but i’m
left with a bitter taste from the penalty awarded. His rapport
looked really good with players, good strong signals (not always
commonplace). Didn’t look the most mobile but positioning was
fine. I liked his adjustment to let more go after the first 20
mins or so, with a lot of soft freekicks awarded before then.
However, I really think we were hard done by the penalty
decision in the first half. As our manager said, we’ve been told
the directive on handball has an emphasis on not awarding as
many penalties, but to be so close and award it, I don’t agree
with this decision myself. Danny took a few seconds before
awarding but decided that it was an offence.
Interested to hear other opinions!

Personally, that isn’t a penalty for me.
Why is Danny wearing orange as well with Colchester in red?!?
Surely the disliked y*llow kit or even blue could’ve been used!

Barrow AFC (First Team) v Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Coy, Martin
Assistant Referee: Woodward, Daniel
Assistant Referee: Topp, Jake
Fourth Official: Gray, Alex
First off, it wasn’t Alex Gray as 4O, not sure who replaced him.
Onto the game. Very poor game overall which included the match
officials. Martin’s foul recognition was inconsistent, and maybe
even shocking. You didn’t know if a foul is going to be given or
not with some fouls given to one team and the exact same but not
the other. Never got hold of Barrow’s time wasting antics.
Barrow’s CB Theo Vassell was throwing himself to the floor at
every opportunity, which resulted in him being given a foul. I
thought you would see Theo in the Olympics competing in the
diving! He FINALLY booked the gk who didn’t care less he was
being booked in the 90th min, as he’d been doing it since the
30th min, with Martin just pointing at his watch and signalling
to hurry.
For Barrow’s goal, now I haven’t seen a replay yet nor saw it in
real time, but apparently 3 of our defenders were being
pushed/fouled during the corner which led to the goal. Our
captain (one of those who were pushed), was trying to talk to
Martin, who took no interest.
Overall, not the best day at the office for the officials, and
the same goes for Crewe.

Tried out the Sky Sports + to try and see bits from as many
matches as possible, and could barely make out Middleton from
the Colchester players as his shirt colour was so similar.
Either the turquoise or yellow would have been better.
It was an interesting exercise, as I tried to go for referees I
wasn't familiar with - there were many names I didn't recognise
as it's been a while since I've been able to watch League 1/2
matches, so it was good to see snippets of those referees. I
didn't watch any one match long enough to make a comment on
performances individually (Michael Barlow was the one I saw the
most of as Tranmere are local to me - but only saw about 15-20
minutes of that one). It'll be interesting to see how it works
with the expanded list and bringing the National League in to
the mix.

Completely agree with yours and Ryan’s comments. We seemed to
use the Black match graphics on socials, which usually indicates
which kit we are wearing so my best guess it’s a mistake on
Colchester’s part to pack the wrong kit or something like that.
Whoever’s mistake it was, I think it was a poor decision.
Another kit clash note at Dorking today, where the sides were
both playing in red until the referee stopped the game in the
first few minutes to make Dorking turn their shirts inside out!
Again, mindboggling all round to let it go ahead to start with!

Tranmere Rovers FC (First Team) v Notts County F.C. (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Barlow, Michael
Assistant Referee: Nelson, Alistair
Assistant Referee: Edet, Emmanuel
Fourth Official: Rushton, Steven
A reasonable start to Michael Barlow's FL refereeing career. He
tried to manage the game without resorting to cards and on the
whole was successful, one each, both justified, some might argue
that Rovers were fortunate not to pick up more in a fairly
feisty opening spell. Mr Barlow's foul detection was a bit
erratic, while he appeared to position himself further away from
the action than many officials. There were 2 claims for a Rovers
penalty, neither clearcut and both rejected. No KMI errors,
overall think that Mr Barlow and those guiding him will be
satisfied with his FL debut.
