Rugby Championship 2024
By: Hendo Date: July 31, 2024, 2:09 pm

The above starts next week but I haven’t see any match official
announcements anywhere, not even on the World Rugby site.
Does anyone - Alfie, RCG etc - know if they are out and where I
can find them if so? Thanks

4 Eng, 1 Ire, 1 Fra, 1 Ita and 1 Geo
3 NZ, 1 Aus
Biggest name to miss out as referee is Nic Berry.
Really pleased to see Big Nika on Aus/NZ along with Karl Dickson
Piardi continues his climb
Bo'K and Doleman on 3 games
A good set of appointments imho

These came out a lot later than usual!!
Agree with RCG in regards to Berry (the fact that he is still
being kept away from South Africa - whilst Rassie is around, and
can only in effect referee Argentina v New Zealand) makes it
easier to rule him out as main referee for this tournament.
I also think it's interesting to see Paul Williams back
refereeing South Africa matches after a number of years being
kept away from them.
Gardner back after coming away from the July internationals.
Again, really difficult to judge the English appointments as
Pearce gets the opening match (always a trusted sign), whilst
Carley gets on paper the most mouth watering tie (imo
surprisingly along with Brace). Dickson gets a decent
appointment at the business end. Have to say whilst I predicted
Piardi & Brousset for matches, I didn't have Ridley down for a
game (very good sign for him).
WR really now looking to see which NH referees (apart from the
established top 3 English lads) can make the grade.
No South African officials (apart from TMO) involved on the
field of play tells you everything about the state of refereeing
there currently.
Davidson has established herself now on the mens circuit IMO and
wouldn't be surprised to see her in further mens
tournaments/windows.
Schneider seems to be the latest Argentinian to be in focus by
WR, let's see if he can move past just an AR role - whilst Evans
gets his obligatory AR role (don't see him now being pushed as a
referee in further WR competitions).

I seem to have lumbered Alfie's post with an "Old" rating, for
which I apologise. The post isn't - I am.

Brousset and Piradi being seen as the latest NH upcoming stars.
Good to see Pearce back and and Ridley in the mix, Nika with
another great appointment but not sure about Dickson and Doleman
has never impressed me.
My main disappointment, as I have voiced earlier, is that Tual
Trainini doesn’t feature in any on-field role - referee or AR
-in any of the internationals from June to September. I think he
is an outstanding referee and expected him to be in the mix
after Raynal’s departure but clearly others disagree. He seems
to be highly though if in France and Europe but not on the wider
international circuit by World Rugby. His only involvement is a
TMO for 3 matches in the Pacific Nations Cup in September, which
almost looks like a “consolation prize” for him.
Others might have a better view on this

Brousset is clearly France's new number 1. WR seem to be looking
at Rozier and Ramos. Clearly Tual is not really on their plans
and with Garces (now Poite & Raynal) or Spreadbury not really
involved the appointing moving forward, I don't see that
changing. Decent referee - he did mess up on a few international
games about 18 months ago and this may be the reason Judge has
lost faith.
I think the Autumn internationals will give us a better idea.

I take it Amashukeli is really on the up in people's
estimations? I must admit to being a fairly casual union watcher
(used to watch more) but really noticed and was impressed by his
poise and the way he let the game flow in the Australia v Wales
match. Obviously nice to see an official from a smaller nation
making their mark also.
