I can absolutely identify with this. I forget I have got a flag
every time I use comms, which is not very often.
Level four officials have also been given the following warning:
A small group of PGMOL officials, part of the ERDP programme,
and operating at Steps 3 & 4, will be shortly authorised to use
the communication system. As a result, you may encounter a few
games at Steps 3 & 4 where you’ll be required to use the system
as an assistant referee.
Presumably these officials will be entrusted with their own
comms equipment.

Unless they are issuing those ERDP referees with a stock of
spare earpieces, I would say that is a bit of a health and
safety issue. I wouldn't be wanting to be putting something in
my ear that might have been in 20 other ears during the course
of the season. Its the same reason we don't reuse headsets at
work with someone leaves, they get to keep them or they are
thrown away, and they just sit on the ear rather than going into
them.

Being handed an earbud with crusty wax residue on it was common
place when I was a Step 1 AR. Yet another reason for me to have
stole the one that I did. Level 2 officials have only been given
a few per colleague. Assuming they retain an entire pack of 2/3
for themselves, if one is lost then AR's will be sharing the
same one bud week in, week out.
If it were me, I would be asking AR's to wipe clean the obvious
evidence of usage post game, then leaving them in boiling detol
water upon return home. That technique, even if fairly obvious,
was told to me by a then Step 1 Referee (later promoted to EFL
before the merger) when I commented that his must be new
considering how clean they were.
Another alternative if ARs don't wish to pay out for the mould
is to spend a few pound on one of the aforementioned packs which
can be easily found on google. From looking at the images of the
universal fit, I'm fairly confident they would connect to the
current comms packs and it removes then both the hygiene and
accessibility issue.
