Certainly overdue for this level and it has been implemented
randomly with the season having already started.
I think those that have risen rapidly through the ranks and/or
those who were never PGMOL officials prior may have significant
adaptation to over come. I remember my first time ever using
comms as an AR in a friendly and then my first official PL2
fixture using them competitively. It's a different word.
I presume also that these sets are the newer ones given to each
individual club as there were certainly enough of the inferior
older sets to be issued to each Level 2.

I remember my first use of comms and the referee politely
reminding me that although I had told him the decision maybe I'd
like to flag to let everyone else know!!
Also keeping everything "in the positive" so there was no chance
of a 'no' being missed (as in no penalty = play on not 'no
       penalty')

I can absolutely identify with this. I forget I have got a flag
every time I use comms, which is not very often.
Level four officials have also been given the following warning:
A small group of PGMOL officials, part of the ERDP programme,
and operating at Steps 3 & 4, will be shortly authorised to use
the communication system. As a result, you may encounter a few
games at Steps 3 & 4 where you’ll be required to use the system
       as an assistant referee.
Presumably these officials will be entrusted with their own
       comms equipment.

I remember mine too. Biggest issue was keeping the damn
earpiece in and that was as 4th official !
I predict a few ARs in the initial weeks running the line with
one hand over the side of their head.

You aren't wrong... I have very narrow ear canals (remarked upon
whenever I go to ENT, I'm hard of hearing so more frequent than
your average, I use a child' size dome on my hearing aid) so I
am actually dreading using them until I can get a mould done,
which really is the only viable long term option for me!! I
will be seeing if the dome from my aid will fit on the earpiece
as that might solve the issue.

Level 2's have been sent the generic earpiece fittings so I
totally agree that colleagues are going to have issues keeping
it in. My first PL2 game using them as an AR, it fell out twice.
Once when the referee desperately needed information from me and
I had to simultaenously complete successive sprints.
I did fortunately manage to find a black ear bud from a
colleague who had purchased a small bundle of them which
contained a variety of fittings. I retained it and never had
issues since. The mould is expensive for anyone on Step 2 fees,
even if it is earnt back throughout the season.

I don't have a specific link as I stole that particular ear bud
       some years ago.
However the colleague had a pack containing an asortment of
styles, colours and sizes similar to these:

Obviously very cheap so it may be worth every Level 2 being sent
a pack by the PGMOL obtaining their own as long as they can be
assured they will fit the relevant comms kit.

Unless they are issuing those ERDP referees with a stock of
spare earpieces, I would say that is a bit of a health and
safety issue. I wouldn't be wanting to be putting something in
my ear that might have been in 20 other ears during the course
of the season. Its the same reason we don't reuse headsets at
work with someone leaves, they get to keep them or they are
thrown away, and they just sit on the ear rather than going into
       them.
