TV games for Ben Speedie, Ben Atkinson, Alex Chilowicz and
newbie Elliot Bell, who seems to be a regular in league one
already. Otherwise a pretty standard set of appointments with
SG2’s Doughty and Martin out and about.
Scott Jackson does Colchester’s 1st round game for a second year
in a row. I’ve not been too impressed in my two viewings of him,
       hopefully 3rd time lucky.

The refereeing standards are at a low point. Over the past few
weeks, Crewe have received inexperienced referees. This week was
another one. John Mulligan. A small referee, young looking. I
thought he had an alright first half, albeit didn’t have much to
do. Dagenham and Redbridge were time wasting from the first
minute. Second half, he was very inconsistent with fouls, and
certainly pulling. Apparently you can climb all over attackers
now and then the attacker gets penalised for it? According to
James Durkin and now John Mulligan you can do that. He never
yellow carded anyone for time wasting. The only thing he did was
wave his arm. The goal that the visitors scored was a correct
penalty call, however it shouldn’t have happened in the first
place because he gave a foul to the visitors which certainly
wasn’t. He should’ve played on because they were pulling each
other!!! He added on 7 mins second half, which I praise, however
they still continued to time waste and he did nothing about it.
The visitors wasted about 3 mins/ 7, and he added on 40 seconds
from the 7. 4/10 performance for me.

I watched the TV FA Cup match Northampton v Kettering
refereed by Elliot Bell, whom I confess I had not really heard
of before today. I guess he must be new to the expanded National
List. I don't think he did his prospects any harm by his showing
on live TV this evening. I was trying to decipher his badge
       LCFA, from Liverpool ?

I thought Elliott Bell handled the game well in point of fact.
Always in control, sanctions spot on, including a tricky call
for DOGSO towards the end which was given as a yellow card in
the end, enough doubt in the referee’s mind there.
With it being a local derby and being on the TV, the new kid on
the block can be pleased with his display.

       Mr Martin Newport v Peterborough
Sorry not able to post link but available on bbc site, but an
interesting decision for 'muscle man' and the assistant
       yesterday...
Ball ends up in the net after a corner, nobody sure how but
'goal' not given. Restart with a corner.
Not something I've seen very often

Did they take the corner too quickly whilst he was trying to
sort out some of the jostling in the box ?

No idea how it ended up in the goal, but the defender certainly
seems to head it against the outside of the side netting. The
video doesn't show it, but I would assume the referee found a
       hole in the net.

How strange. Took me back to Palace v Nottingham Forest in
August 1971 when Steve Kember put the ball in the net (or so he
thought) and, after protests from the Forest players, the
referee, Ron Judson, found a hole in the net. Ron then enquired
of the players what they thought had happened, with differing
and predictable results, and he even asked the photographers
behind the goal whether they could help, but all to no avail. No
TV cameras to look at, despite it being a Division 1 match, and
Ron ended up awarding a corner, which it definitely wasn't. The
game ended 1 1 and, at the season end, Forest went down and
       Palace survived just.
Talking of cameras, is it possible that Mr Martin got help from
the 4O accessing camera footage of the incident at Newport? Just
       wondering.
