Completely different reaction here to Law5 so which do I
believe?

Hes been shocking thought two yellows early one were soft (think
Mainoo was one and one for Slovakia)
Slovakia should be down to 10
Get him on the next plane, he can car share with Southgate t9
the airport

Let’s find some better adjectives. “Shocking” needs to be
reserved for a decision that merits it. A disagreement over a
yellow here or there isn’t it.

His problem in the first half was a complete lack of
consistency. Two England players got yellow cards for fouls but
when almost identical fouls were committed by Slovakia (treading
on a player's foot) no yellow card.

Agreed fully. Set his stall out with early yellow cards but then
failed to follow it up later with cards when it mattered.
Inconsistent in my view and I cannot see him refereeing another
game at this tournament.

I thought he was generally very good. Early cautions for ENG
were all correct - and he was strong enough to give them.
Actually thought the first SVK caution was very harsh (not a
foul). Tried to wave the right things away for both teams, when
players went down too easily. Actually thought it was a 2YC for
SVK in the edge of the area - player was never going to win the
ball and it was SPA. That was the only key error for me. AR2
made a few poor decisions, including the terrible throw in mix
up when the ball had already well gone out of play.

It's the first time I've seen this ref and I thought he was very
'curate's egg'! A bit too card happy for my likes early on and
then didn't issue cards for more serious offences including a
couple (as posted above) by players already on a yellow. I
didn't think he was desperately poor but not outstanding either.
Wouldn't be surprised if this was his last middle.

Painfully inconsistent. Something you don't want to see at this
level, and shouldn’t.

His problem was the game left him nowhere to go. First foul by
Guehi is a nailed on yellow after 3 mins so any scope goes out
the window. Mainoo is a yellow every ref has been consistent
with in the tournament, and the next two are straightforward.
But after 4 inside 20 mins he obviously wanted to relax it a bit
and that’s where inconsistency set in.
Felt for him a bit as if he’d carried on he could’ve had 12 and
a couple off (which although justifiable the game didn’t
need)…overall not as bad as some on here would suggest.

Can’t agree with this at all. There was certainly no problem
with consistency in the first half. If you want to make the case
for the second half not being consistent with the first the I
can see where you are coming from. But there were no challenges
in the first half where Slovakia players came down on the top of
the foot of an England player where you would expect a YC in
line with UEFA’s guidelines and it wasn’t issued.

The consistency point from those critical of referees / a
refereeing performance is one that always intrigues me.
Some of those criticising the performance tonight appear to be
bemoaning the lack of disciplinary action in later stages of the
game for challenges which attracted a YC earlier on. There may
well have been missed cautions tonight (for example, I haven’t
seen the supposed 2YC for a Slovakia player early on in the
second half). I also think the YC for a Slovakia player jumping
into Toney(?) on the half way line in ET was wrong. But my focus
is on the wider consistency argument.
Firstly, no two challenges are identical. Particularly when
considering a YC for a reckless challenge. Even SPA will have
variances on position of the offence and other players.
Secondly, what would people rather - a referee to get things
wrong early doors and then be consistently wrong throughout the
match, or try to get as many calls right as possible having
realised their judgment earlier on may have been a little off?
If people are criticising because they thought the early cards
were right but the same approach wasn’t taken later on then I
could see where they were coming from, but I get the feeling a
lot of the ‘consistency critics’ would be in the camp of ‘set
his stall out too early’ rather than ‘correct to start and
didn’t carry on’.
I have often said to players my job is to get as many decisions
correct as possible. Not to be equally / consistently wrong for
both teams - is that not akin to ‘evening things up’?
Game management comes into it as well. You don’t want to come
off the field with anything close to a double digit card count.
You may decide not to YC something at one point whereas earlier
/ later you might. Control and context are things a top referee
will have in their thoughts. Purists will say it doesn’t matter
if we end up with 9v9 - the referee was just doing his job and a
card is a card. I suspect most of them would also criticise the
referee for losing control of the match. Having your cake and
eating it too comes to mind.
