Surprised about the Bastien appointment. He's been around for a
while but isn't usually a regular in Champions League knockout
       matches.

Kovacs with the prime pickings in Madrid.
Thought Taylor would be in Paris, alas it’s Oliver instead with
       an important observer.
Kovacs with a similarly important observer.

100% that Kovacs will send someone off in that game. Despite the
love he gets on here, I really find that he’s a fussy and card
happy referee. As proven in the Euros 2024, and almost every big
       game he’s managed since.

I think he’s just a referee that uses a strict application of
the laws in a game. At times, this makes him seem very card
happy but he referees to each individual law. He certainly
doesn’t seem to manage games like many PL refs are trying to
       recently.
There are different approaches to refereeing football matches
and Kovacs just applies the laws in a heavily strict manner.
Personally, I have nothing wrong with it if he makes the correct
       decisions.

Perhaps bmb can fill us in as to why Kovacs isn’t with his usual
assistants he has had in the past?

Vasile Marinescu is now 48 and Mihai Artene 47. By the time the
World Cup is held in 2026 they will have in all likelihood
retired, they both still appear on the FIFA list currently. He's
been given a new team with younger AR's, if he is in the list
for contention for the WC 26 then he will have had 2 full
seasons working with them. I'm a bit sad about it because Vasile
       has always been my favourite!

I concur fully. Kovacs to me only appears strict because other
referees are lenient and, in particular, he won't tolerate
dissent. I hope very much he does not change his approach in
what is a huge huge test for him. I think a good performance
tonight will elevate him from the top tier in the elite group to
the top top tier in the elite group (in my made up ranking
system!) I wish him the best. I have always said, Kovacs
development shows that I know nothing and bmb knows all - I was
very doubtful of his ability to be a top referee, how delighted
I have been to be proven wrong, he is now one of my favorites to
watch. Looking forward to another stellar performance.

Thank you! I first started championing him when he was still a
2nd tier referee. First time I saw him I knew he was destined
for the top & I am so happy for him. One of the loveliest people
ever and a hugely talented referee. It took a lot of people a
long while to see what I knew was there within him. It was
incredibly insulting when people were claiming he wouldn't have
got his chance without Ovi being taken ill, he was already
surpassing him at that point as people like Alex Deaconu and
Kyros Vassaras knew - they were still years behind me mind! Now
watch for his younger brother who made the FIFA list this year!
