       Schärer: Georgia v Portugal

Brilliant decision to YC for simulation just now - one of the
       decisions of the tournament

Some brave decisions, including YC to Ronaldo for dissent.
Missed a key incident though with the Georgia penalty that was
       overturned by VAR.

I really dislike the award of the penalty. Absolutely minute
contact and the player falls like he’d been poleaxed.
Howard Webb and his “contact with consequence” view needs to be
       adopted worldwide by IFAB.

From the referees angle it looked like an exaggerated fall
       (which I think it was)
       Was there contact? Yes
       Was it forceful? No
Did it cause him to cartwheel? Unlikely
       We in "supportable" territory yet?
To me, I think whatever was given on field, should have stood
(Enjoying the way Georgia play however and seeing CR7s toys
       flying)

If so - Hopefully they'll apply it better than the PGMOL do!

Also just to clarify TTFL - I in no way meant that as a snide
remark to the very valid point you were making! I fully agree
       with you.

Thought he was much better in this second game. Much more
relaxed but sharp and on the ball. Kept game going and coped
well with Portugal’s shameless antics which are never easy for
the referee. Repeatedly exaggerating contact and gesturing etc
but wasn’t swayed. Superb YC for diving. Still didn’t think it
was a penalty, even on replay - full on exaggerated fall because
of the swing. Can be justified as a penalty, but would even have
been happy to see ref stick with his immediate judgement to wave
       it away.
Georgia have been great to watch though so was happy to see them
       win and go through!

Minimal contact so poor OFR from VAR

Spot on and this is the downside of VAR - it’s become
established (directed by UEFA/FIFA??) that you effectively have
to change the decision, if you’re called over. Also everyone
knows, by definition, another senior referee thinks you’ve made
a ‘clear and obvious error’. Dressing it up as not re-refereeing
the game by making the ref trot over doesn’t cut it, if the ref
is effectively pressured into changing. I wouldn’t have liked
being called over for that - may be the angles, but couldn’t
really see the contact even in the replays.
