So Makkelie goes home but Siebert stays. I smell something funny
and it’s not Baldricks underpants

UEFA give no incentive to refereeing the big games, I thought
Makkelie was excellent the other night, clearly recognising
cynical, frustrated fouls late on (which saw the number of cards
shoot up)
To me he is better than the ordained Orsato, Vincic et Al
His only rival in my eyes is Kovacs and unfortunately the number
of cards may have seen to them both

Apparently, Danny Makkelie, Jesus Gil Manzano, Sandro Schärer,
Marco Guida and Istvan Kovacs have all gone home
[/quote]
If that is correct, apart from the 8 referees in R16, does that
leave Taylor, Tello, Vincic, Turpin and Siebert with 7 referees
required for the remaining games? Or have I missed someone?
One of them could get the Final and another a SF, but otherwise
it would require 1 or 2 of the R16 referees to get another game
and then there's the appointment of 4Os. Do UEFA normally
retain a 'spare' referee in case of injury or illness?

There isnt much choice should England, France, Italy Germany and
or Portugal make the latter stages.

Makkelies treatment is often bizarre, This season he has
refereed some potentially hot clashes like Barcelona V Napoli,
Roma V Leverkusen, and not only come out unscathed but performed
excellently. But wasn’t rewarded with a UCL Final. The KMI in
Croatia V Italy may well have been enough to send him home this
time if true. But when you consider other refs who have had
KMI’s have been kept on, it does seem like he is often the
sacrificial lamb.

The missing name is Kruzliak. Has he gone home, do we know?

I saw this comment on the Law 5 blog that I very much agree
with. My issue is it seems that some referees are protected from
the difficult games to keep their powder dry for the finals
(e.g. Vincic) whereas others are given the difficult games and
then sacrificed to appease federations when there is inevitable
fallout (eg Makkelie, Cakir). For example, Vincic doing the
Champions League final this year when he'd never even referred
Real Madrid before! If I was Makkelie I would feel very hard
done by; there are referees who had a much worse tournament who
are staying on - Turpin had three KMIs in one match and is still
there!
------------
The referees who officiate the final are determined early in the
season, before knock-outs, and get a "hidden path". Refcom knows
exactly what games are the most risky and thus how to protect
referees from negative headlines when appointing referees.
2021 -> Kuipers EURO
2022 -> Turpin UCL
2023 -> the plan was Taylor/Makkelie, but with an English team
in the final and the latter in poor form (injured), there were
no other options than Marciniak.
2024 -> Vincic UCL
Even Soares Dias and his Conference league final is a good
example, as he wasn’t assigned to a single UCL game.
2024 -> Orsato already locked for the final, under the condition
that Italy is out.

Italy are out now, so - based on the above - all bets should be
on Orsato.

I think Daniele Orsato will be feeling really quite pleasantly
pleased about future prospects now.
