Why should an outfield player have to adjust their game just
because they are facing the goalkeeper? He slid in, both legs
and feet on the floor, played the ball with the laces, hooking
it towards goal, at which point the GK arrives taking the front
of the boot to the chest, whilst both players are prone. If that
had been a defender would the same call be made? I guess its
always going to be a free kick but a yellow card?

It is not a foul just because he is facing a goalkeeper. A
challenge like that on an outfield player is also a reckless
foul. It would also be a reckless challenge by the goalkeeper
if he had chosen to challenge with his feet rather than his
       hands.

Shame, as thought he had a number of strengths. Like Orsato, can
use his experience to keep game moving, spot players trying to
fake fouls, etc. Excellent fitness, no nonsense style.
But main issue is the cards and management - a number could
easily have been public warnings and were not in keeping with
the general style of officiating in the tournament. Spanish refs
often can’t seem to judge it - overreact to the slightest rise
in temperature, the soft fouls and YCs start, and the game
management breaks down. Is it due to the combative style of La
Liga were everyone’s trying to get one over on everyone else and
the cards start flying around?? Don’t watch enough of it these
days but Spanish refs do struggle to adapt to international
       games sometimes?
