Comprehensive review of Premier League referees and VARs from

This article from Dale Johnson is the most comprehensive data
review I've ever come across at the end of a Premier League
season -

It lists all the 31 VAR errors recorded by the Premier League's
KMI panel across the season.
It also makes reference to other errors recorded against each
referee which weren't deemed relevant for VAR intervention -
e.g. not clear and obvious or a 2nd yellow card.
It also breaks down errors made by each VAR.
Simon Hooper, John Brooks and impressively Sam Barrott seem to
come out especially well as on-field referees. Anthony Taylor
and Michael Oliver probably a bit under par. Craig Pawson and
Stuart Attwell disappointing for their experience (you can see
from this why Attwell didn't get Cup final! - doesn't seem his
best season on-field or as VAR.) and bad figures for Michael
Salsbury and Tony Harrington as referees. The likes of David
Coote and Paul Tierney maybe do better on the pitch than some
would expect according to these figures.
In contrast, Salsbury seems to do very well as VAR (apart from
on opening weekend of season!) Credit to him for that. Brooks
also performs well as VAR. But Tierney and Attwell seemingly not
so good.
It might take you a while to go through it but I think it's
definitely an article worth exploring and lots to discuss!

First of all, it’s unbelievable that Sam barrott has 15 games as
an sg2.secondly only 2 interventions in 15 game is
excellent.next season I could see him getting a few big games!

Some refs struggle to reach double figures in their first season
after being promoted let alone in their trial season but Sam has
been outstanding this season and fully deserves all the
appointments.

I think the danger with the article is that the sample sizes are
too low. A sample size of 10 for Harrington with 5 VAR
interventions is statistically too low to make any valid
inference.

Very interesting stuff, thanks for posting.
The data doesn't take into account whether the on field referee
has made a 'wrong decision' e.g. given yellow instead of red Vs
having their view of an incident blocked

Many thanks for posting Readingfan.
As the last date ion the listed incidents was 15 May, do we
assume it does not include the final matches on the 19th,
bearing in mind there were several controversial incidents and
decisions? It would have been interesting to know the Panel's
verdict on the "foul" on Sterling in the Chelsea v Bournemouth
game, and perhaps more so, the decision of Oliver to stick with
no "handball" by Jesus when summoned to the monitor.
Incidentally, I did wonder what the protocol would be if Oliver
told VAR he didn't see any contact with the arm from his view. A
missed incident. Would Attwell, knowing it was a subjective
decision, send Oliver to the screen anyway to make his decision,
or do we assume that Attwell believed it to be handball and
Oliver did overrule that opinion?

I'd presume it would include the final day as it would seem a
bit odd to do a season review and not wait a few days if
necessary to cover the final weekend.
I presume the stats for number of games etc include final day
and I'm sure there was one part which said 'There were X rounds
of 38 where no errors were found to be made by VAR'.
Do we know if Howard Webb's doing a final show with Owen to
round off the season or is he on his holidays?

I made a coffee, put myself in a Teams meeting on my own for an
hour and thoroughly lost myself in this article today. As a
nerd/data guy this spoke to my soul.
Thanks so much for posting, [member=51]Readingfan[/member]
I also echo the comment from [member=968]Pm2[/member] re Sam
Barrot. I've not seen too much of him this season, but what I
have I've been extremely impressed with his absent style and how
he just blends into the background with minimal fuss. Would love
for him to get some high profile games and continue this
trajectory he's on.

The article needs to be seen as a pure PR piece, because that's
what it is.
For the most recent decision in my mind, there is absolutely no
mention of the Semenyo foul on Sterling being an error. And any
piece that doesn't conclude that as an error is clearly
pointless.

The article is quite clear on the data it is presenting and is
very thorough in laying it out.
Of course you can disagree with some of the panel's judgements
if you wish but knowing exactly which errors have been recorded
as VAR mistakes helps us to do that in a way we couldn't
otherwise.
I don't think the article would work if it also started saying
'I thought the Chelsea V Bournemouth game also featured an error
so I'm going to put that into the list too' as you'd just end up
with blurred lines between the two.
