The kit is officially called volt green so when I asked he
innocently replied green! He’s not silly, that’s for sure.
There’s me expecting the Macron green blue kit - I should have
known!! He’s pulled that one before and I fell for it then as
well! He knows if it’s a masterclass it’ll reduce time spent on
the naughty step!

Don't want to jinx yet but it looks like a slightly shorter stay
on the naughty step for him.

Good performance in a fairly easy game

Superb display from the best referee in europe and probably the
world and his team tonight.
Refereed with his serious head on, refereed as he normally does
didnt change approach because it was a major final.
All cautions correct including one early on to the leverkusen
player at the first sign of dissent which nipped that in the
bud.
Excellent decision by AR2 when the keeper came out of his box
and stepped back as he handled the ball inside the area when
another part of his body remained outside the box.
Two slight pitfalls, one appearing in a vile coloured shirt
after trying the pull the wool over the eyes of someone who
should be obeyed and secondly failure to punish himself with a
caution for taking a dive just outside the penalty area. It is
believed he was trying to avoid a shot from a sniper in a
wheelchair in the crowd who crossed the border from the other
side.
Think the performance will ensure only a short stay on the
naughty step and missy bmb wont be asking for shirt to be signed
and handed over tonight

It is such a great pleasure to watch Istvan Kovacs referee, he
has become one of the greatest referees in Europe and in my
humble opinion comfortably within the greatest European referees
of the past decade and beyond. What I really appreciate about
Kovacs that in addition to his unquestionably nuanced and adept
soft skills and man management - he isn't afraid to referee
simply. We really saw this in the recent Barcelona v PSG game,
if he had to give a yellow or a red to a player or coach he
never shirked his responsibility for the rather tired idea of
keeping eleven players on the pitch at all costs. English
referees could learn a lot in my view from a referee with great
fortitude and clarity of conviction. I am so glad that he kept
this approach in the final to cement himself as a truly great
official. Politics, timing and so much more will come into it
but given his age I think Mr. Kovacs can achieve a great deal
more than his already impressive CV.
And for me personally it is such a great pleasure to be proven
wrong about a referee whom I once doubted as a top class
official - shows what very little that I know! More importantly
it shows one thing we all know -
bmb is always right!
Bravo Istvan!

It is rather unusual for me to watch a club match in a European
competition these days. Firstly I am usually out watching or
taking part in a proper game :) and secondly I am too tight to
pay for a TNT subscription as well as Sky. However I found
myself at home, on my own and with this game available free of
charge so I indulged. I have to say it was a great pleasure. I
loved Atalanta's attitude which seemed so different from Italian
clubs of the past and many clubs of all nationalities (and
levels) now. They took the lead, realised they were on top,
kept pressing, didn't worry about indulging in gamesmanship and
got their reward. No messing about "managing the game".
Fantastic. And well done Ademola Lookman who I always felt was
hard done to in the way he was treated in this country.
As far as the referee was concerned: very good. I like the way
he encouraged Atalanta to hurry with the first throw in of the
second half, putting down an early marker which did the trick.
Whilst praise is due to both teams for playing without the usual
cynicism it reflects well on the match control of the referee.
I also thoroughly approved of the yellow card for Wirtz at the
first sign of dissent, as mentioned above, even if it did baffle
the commentators.
Not so sure about the late no penalty call for Leverkusen. It
looked like one to me. The one continual negative was his
positioning. He got too close to the action on occasions and
was frequently in obvious passing lanes just outside the penalty
area. This lead to the need for evasive action to be taken a
number of times, culminating in him having to throw himself to
the ground to avoid being hit by the ball. Being on the ground
is not a good place to be just as a quick break is starting!

I didn't watch the game so can't comment in detail about Kovacs
performance. From what I've seen of him previously, he strikes
me as a very good elite referee.
Reading positive comments elsewhere as well as on here, the view
was that it was a far less challenging game than Anthony
Taylor's last year. I was slightly surprised therefore that the
match stats showed 33 free kicks which included 21 against the
winners Atalanta, and 7 YCs split 4 / 3.
Just curious whether it's felt it was his strict approach that
resulted in the game being less challenging and Kovacs always
being well in control, or whether if the teams were prepared to
concentrate on playing football, he could have managed some
situations differently. Or was that his usual style which he
kept to, or maybe the way UEFA wanted it refereed?

Sorry! I didn't mean to dislike your excellent post. Fingers and
thumbs do strange things nowadays. I can only apologise, Ref
