Gary Willard was the referee on my very first FA appointment (an
FA Trophy line, back in the late 1980s). He made a young,
nervous referee very much at home and became a friend for the
rest of my active career.
Gary was one of that batch of great Sussex refs to make the very
top and fully deserved to do so. Success did not change him and
he spent much of what turned out to be the rest of his life
giving back to football in general and referees in particular.
Although we had lost contact over the years, I will miss him
very much.
RIP Gary.

Thoughts and condolences to Gary’s family and loved ones. One of
the kindest and most beautiful people you could ever meet.
Taught me so much over the years especially in relation to how
to be a good coach and observer. Always took a huge interest in
bmb jr., who absolutely adored him. He'd set him LOTG tests from
when jr was just 8/9 years old and they'd have some lively
debates about games. Gave the most amazing hugs, I will miss
those.
RIP teddy bear man. You will be greatly missed. Your legacy will
live on in every one whose lives you touched 💔

Another one of the famous Sussex officials that has sadly passed
away.
Along with the late well respected Allan Gunn from near my home
town of Lewes, and others, they flew the Sussex FA flag high and
wide in the top flight for many years.
Condolences to his family and friends.

RIP Gary. He was my coach this season in my local CORE group and
what a wonderful person he was, inside and out. A fountain of
knowledge and a lovely, kind human. He will be deeply missed.

A true servant of the game. For Gary Willard it was never "about
me" but always "about us". He refereed without ego and without
seeking to draw attention to himself; one of the best.
Condolences to his family, friends and all who mourn his passing

Only met the man a couple of times but he was so down to earth
and wanted to give his experience out to the younger generation
of referees. I’ve seen how influential he has been to lots of
different officials. RIP
