Well - NO surprises with Raynal on his appointment. A fitting
send-off for him!
Pretty obvious that an Englishman was going to be appointed to
the Champions Final. What is the surprise is that Carley gets
the nod over Pearce and Dickson considering how the semi's
panned out.
Look, Matt is an extremely competent official who I'm sure will
doing a great job and wish him the very best.
Not really sure what to say here in regards to Luke - Both WR
and EPCR just don't seem (judging by the appointments) to push
him as the English number 1.
I also expected Piardi and Brace to be involved in some
capacity.
Good luck to all the officials involved.

As stated no surprise about Raynal, will be the second time I
have seen him referee in the flesh.
I am shocked its Carley for the big one given how much support
has been given for Dickson and that Pearce did the semi final.
Good to see Piardi involved and I wouldn't mind betting big Nika
will be at one of the games as 4th.

Challenge Cup - Gloucester started so well but could not
capitalise, good early YC for persistent infringement.
Unfortunately for both the English side and the French referee
it went downhill from there
Not sure anyone in the ground fully comprehended breakdowns as
each seemed to be refereed very differently. Zach Mercer,
Unfortunately decided he had to try and win the game on his own,
which meant he was isolated a lot or tried killer offloads
Gloucester scrum in the first half was decimated
Their replacements at the start of the 2nd half won the first
scrum penalty and it looked like parity had been restored. But
after Gloucester had got back into the match Monsieur Raynal
penalised them at the next scrum, inside the 22, and the South
African team began to build an unassailable lead. Moans and
groans from neutral fans around me continued as the Cherry and
Whites were refereed out of a comeback. In my opinion was a
shame for Raynal, who has been a very good referee, but on the
night was not the best.

Champions Cup
A very physical, intense game of test match proportions AND
needed refereeing. It became obvious early on that penalties
could be decisive and I felt Matt Carley established a good
level of involvement, consistently applied. Leinster allowed
themselves to get isolated too often and Toulouse had the
players to take advantage.
Kinghorn kicked very well for the French before Ramos took over
later on.
Leinster huffed and puffed but hit Toulouse on a very good
defensive day
The 3 main decisions - foot in touch was in the end easy to see
once the director got the right angles
The RC was correct once seen, fair play to Carley and hid team
for not "bottling" it; there was no mitigation
The Leinster try seemed to take longer than needed. In the
ground we were unaware it was originally given as "no try",
hence the frustration when replay after replay was shown -
initially short, reached out, bottom of ball hit the ground
Toulouse were excellent in extra time and shut the game out
well.
Carley did well. You could tell how much it took out of him as
he was barely walking after.
A great weekend. Tickets for Cardiff 2015 already booked

I am totally baffled by what Luke Pearce seems to have done to
get demoted below Carley and Dickson in the eyes of the powers
that be. He still remains the best referee in England in my view
and I don't understand his treatment at the 2023 Rugby World Cup
and ever since.

Watching the match on TV I thought Raynal had a mixed game,
could have shown a yellow within 30 seconds but decided against
it! I agree there were some baffling penalty calls against
Gloucester at the scrum which really didn't help them.
Having said that, the Sharks thoroughly deserved the victory
IMO.

Thought Carley had a decent game with the main decisions were
spot on IMHO.
Regarding Pearce, I think we are all baffled - However, I don't
think it's a demotion, more that the powers that be don't have a
clear number 1 in England on the European and World stage hence
mixing it up between all 3.
It will be interesting to see who gets the prem semi's (fully
expect to see these 3 in the frame) as I would expect whomever
misses out from the 3 will get the final (I'd put a small bet
Karl Dickson gets the nod this year!).
