Brentford v AFCB - Matt Donohue
DIR By: bmb

---------------------------------------------------------
Wore that vile shirt so has not endeared himself to Missy bmb.
Overall remained in the background and just got on and done his
thing quietly and mostly competently. Several talking points.
Dom Solanke disallowed goal 1: We can't complain about the
handball by Semenyo. It was a handball under the LOTG and he
gained an advantage from getting away with it in real time which
led directly to the attacking phase the goal was scored from. It
was right in front of the tech area. Disappointing but correct
call. VAR intervention and an OFR took place.
Dom Solanke disallowed goal 2: I'm calling it a disallowed goal
as the ball was just about going over the line into the goal
when he blew the whistle. Was no foul so why he blew up only he
knows. Had he blown a split second later the ball would have
already crossed the line & VAR could have sent him to have
another look, that split second made all the difference &
nothing VAR could do.
Brentford penalty: Yes Zaba made the tiniest of contact with
Toney, but Toney was already 2/3 way to the floor "anticipating
the contact" that was about to come. VAR intervention and after
OFR correctly overturned the penalty call and the YC to Zaba
wiped out. IMO Toney should also have been booked for
simulation.
Got some stick from the East & North stands for a non offside.
Replays showed the Brentford player was at least 2 feet onside -
correct call.
Gave Brentford a goal kick that should have been an AFCB corner.
Not sure how that was missed by him and AR1 as the Brentford
player who put it out was 2/3 feet away from any other player.
Last 15 mins of the game were the best - 3 cracking goals
scored.
He's being slated by AFCB fans on SM but in my opinion, they're
judging on an offside they feel affronted we weren't given,
correctly as I said above, and a correct handball that led to a
goal being disallowed. Certainly not the worst ref we have seen,
imo, but nowhere near the best either. I'm sure he will learn
from it and will continue to grow and develop.

I am sure he will quickly learn two things after today, dont be
quick on the whistle as in the Dom Solanke disallowed goal when
you have var and more importantly to hand in that shirt in that
certain colour when entering darsetshire.

Your comment about being fast tracked from U8s football is
extremely disrespectful to the EFL and in particular the
Championship, where Mr Donohue has refereed for several seasons.
He might not have had the best of games, but don’t forget where
you have come from so readily.

I hate to disagree with BMB, but I felt that the established SG
referee acting as VAR threw the debutant Premier League referee
under the bus (more than once).
The handball that caused the first "goal" to be disallowed might
possibly be justified under the current nonsense that is the
handball law, but it was a long time before the goal was scored
and the desire to review was increased by pretty much every
Bournemouth player (in the vicinity) stopping playing to appeal
to the referee. Had they followed the old adage of playing to
the whistle they would have had a much better chance of
preventing a goal.
(As an aside, Brentford's winning goal came from a challenge
which could have been a foul back in Brentford's left back
position. There was a very quick transition leading to the
winning goal. If VAR can intervene for an alleged handball on
the halfway line, maybe it should have interfered in this case?)
The disallowed Bournemouth goal was a foul - the attacker
"rolled" the defender with his arm and body to dispossess him.
The referee was well positioned and made his decision before the
ball was struck. It might have taken him a second or two to
share that decision with the world (by blowing his whistle) but
every referee knows there is a time lag between the mental
process of making the decision and the physical process of
indicating said decision.
The Toney penalty was a foul. The defender came from a position
whereby he could not legally play the ball and barged Toney
over. That "contact" in the centre circle is a free kick ten
times out of ten without an eyebrow being raised. Again the
referee was well placed to make the decision and - in my view he
made the right decision.
The VAR interventions struck me as a case of an experienced VAR
"schooling" the (Premier League) rookie in the ways of the EPL.
You can almost hear him saying: "Don't be making those big
decisions based on the skill and experience that got you here;
do it our way".
I am sure many will disagree with me, but this game has - for me
- been a good example of why VAR was a great idea in theory but
is not improving the game in reality.

The handball leading up to the goal.. I called it there and then
and didnt really celebrate the goal too much as it was always
going to be reviewed. The referee may also have been unsighted
which it why it was not given at the time. Semenyo got a big
advantage which may have influenced the officials into giving
the FK and disallowing the goal.
Didn't think the ref's perfornamce was great, but it wan't as
bad as many Cherries fans' reactions may have suggested.. so
think me and BMB thinking along the same lines.

I'm disappointed that the officials somehow managed to twice
either fail to spot (or the referee declined to sanction)
Solanke for his mask celebrations for both the disallowed goal
in the first half, and the goal that stood in the second half.
It's a mandatory caution, and should have seen Solanke being
dismissed (although I'd hope he wouldn't have been so stupid as
to repeat it had he been cautioned as he should have been in the
first half).

The "penalty" is outside the box so surely a very good VAR
intervention

Whilst you are correct in law and I have no issue with what you
have posted , it is definitely a sad state of affairs if we are
thinking that is important, if you genuinely think it is then I
respectfully suggest the game is dying. :(

I do think it's important, as referees at the highest levels
failing to give mandatory sanctions such as these cause referees
at grassroots level to have unnecessary problems when they do
their job correctly. While I accept that there will be times
when subjective situations will be managed in the name of event
management (or whatever other term you'd like to give it), there
is no subjectivity here - it is a mandatory caution (and has
been so since 2007).

The mask comments are a good point. Had he have taken his shirt
off then he would have been booked with no questions asked.
Covering the head or face with a mask or other similar item is
also specified.
