Clattenburg

Yet another short-lived role. Saudi boss, China boss/ref,
pundit, advisor. Chose to retire early to explore these
money-making adventures, which he’s entitled to do but we’re
entitled to criticise. Like Hackett, never keen on people trying
to make hay by slagging off their ex-colleagues (or people they
managed!). I’m in the minority who was never a massive fan -
thought he was revered but a bit over rated at the time and
prefer refs just to get on with the job and be less showy. No
sympathy, but no doubt he’ll rock up again in some new role in
due course!

I worked on games with Mark on many occasions, outstanding
referee, right up there with the very best this country has
produced - never a team player though and always an edge to him
Not surprised the post refereeing path he took into the media
and also not surprised it hasn’t worked out - his actions whilst
employed by Forest in criticising his former colleagues were ill
judged and poor and have certainly tarnished his reputation and
image
I have no doubt he will rock up elsewhere and continue his now
ref bashing role, but after this debacle the pool of potential
employers within the game, and sport in general will be ever
diminishing

I hope Mr Clattenburg does not continue in a ref-bashing role.
Such actions demean himself not the referee whom he is bashing.
I was out once with an Observer, sadly now no longer with us,
watching Mr Clattenburg when he was very rapidly making a name
for himself and rising through the ranks. He had a perfectly
satisfactory match but there were some notable errors. Mr
Observer said that he would point these out to him as areas for
improvement though " he won't like it, I'm not sure he really
believes there is much room for improvement " It seems clear to
me that Mr Clattenburg was somewhat of a marmite figure; you
either really rated him enormously highly ( as did Mr Collina )
or you found the ego a bit too much and detracted from the
performance.

Comments above spot on. As a referee, I always aimed to keep it
simple - turn up, enjoy day with my team, be pleasant to people,
try do a good job and get home. Plenty of others were more
willing to ‘play the game’, schmoozing with teams, trying to
talk up marks with assessors/clubs and would often make little
pretence of being a team player. Would happily drop a teammate
in it to their own advantage. Never worked with him, but MC
always struck me as the latter and I always found the system
almost encouraged that type of behaviour.

Hackett has been the stand out figure in recent years when it
comes to slagging off his former colleagues, with most of them
under his command when he failed miserably in running the PGMOL.
This is why whenever he makes comments, they are generally not
worth paying any attention too.. just like Clattenburg.

Hackett does take the biscuit to be fair - the hutzpah to
continuously laud his time as boss.
He was a terrible speaker at conferences, went on and on about
meaningless SMART targets like they were something new, same 1/2
refs with all the games, big personality refs just ruled the
roost, FIFA refs dropped to an embarrassing 6 eligible refs with
no future planning. Yes, brought in comm kits and Prozone but
the way he slags off most referees these days is very poor.
