About time!
It certainly seems sensible to extend the training to cover SG2
considering some of them will be presumably promoted to SG1
eventually and a wider pool of VARs might be needed - it's quite
possible too that in the Football League there are some
officials who don't quite have the fitness/man management skills
to officiate in the Premier League but would make excellent
VARs.
I find it very strange that SG2 referees haven't been used at
all in the VAR trials so far, especially when someone like Andy
Madley refereed at Stamford Bridge - there will be 10 games
played simultaneously on the final day of next season so they
are going to need 20 officials to referee a game with VAR or be
a VAR for that day certainly.

Because everyone is a better ref when they are watching on the
TV. I know this for fact because my twitter feed tells me so,
every single matchday...

Serious point. It is inconceivable that the very best decision
makers with use of technology are the very same people who have
to combine their decision making with stringent fitness
capabilities and inter-personal skills. We don't need "been
there, done it" officials who can empathize with referees and
understand why they've got it wrong; we need people who are
excellent in making the correct decision from the technology
evidence available.

The important thing is it has to be people with a good knowledge
of the LOTG, this is why referees/ex referees will always be the
first and probably only point of call. Daddy bmb played
professionally for many years, coached & managed in the top
flight & acted as a match day delegate in the PL before retiring
and putting his feet up - his knowledge of the LOTG is
reasonable but he would never fall into the category of "people
who are excellent in making the correct decision from the
technology evidence available". You could put ex-players
through a referee course (the theoretic side if not the
practical side) to bring their knowledge of the LOTG up to
scratch but there is nothing to suggest they would then develop
the skills needed to make the correct decisions because their
match day skill sets are completely different and they would
have to change their whole mindset from thinking like a player
to judging decisions on whether or not they are correct within
the LOTG as opposed to the 'the decision is wrong because it was
given against my team mindset' they will have likely had in
their playing career. You only have to listen to the ex-player
pundits to see the typical knowledge of the LOTG - it varies
from reasonable to absolutely shocking. I don't think it
necessarily needs to be an ex top flight referee, referees
further down the ladder apply those same LOTG week in week out.
Who else but referees has the required knowledge of the LOTG to
make the decisions?

Which if I am being honest worries me. I have always thought he
is vastly overrated and exudes a great feeling of arrogance but
he seems to be held in high regard and, on the basis of this one
performance, may find himself being pushed again. I recall it
happened with another Ref a few years ago - one good game and
all of a sudden he was being hailed as a rising star and fast
tracked. I wonder what Mr Robert Madley is doing now? 🤪

Mike Dean isn't fit enough now so he shouldn't be going on
another year.
Same goes for John Moss and Martin Atkinson. They just don't
have the stamina. It's probably not their fault but the lack of
a decent training regime!

Personally I think that Martin Atkinson and in particular Mike D
ean have been two of the best performers this season - and I
think Jon Moss has had a comparatively good season.
