Red card question - Gills v Donny (Chilowicz)

The incident is in here. The goalkeeper handles the ball outside
of the area and is sent off. My question is, why by law is this
       a red card?
I think few people would argue with it BUT, the ball is going
wide of the goal. There are three covering defenders and the
attacker is running in the complete other direction. So by law I
can’t see how it is a red card?
Would love to hear what others think?

Looking at the footage it seems to me the goalkeeper by
illegally handling the ball ( outside of the area ) prevents a
fellow defender from scoring an own goal. Therefore he has
denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity, the fact that a
defender would have scored the goal for the opposition is not
relevant surely. Such was the pace of the attempted back pass I
do not believe any of the other defenders could have prevented
the ball from going into the net.

The angle is not conclusive from the video, for me tho the
referee must deem it to be on target and going in with no one
else stopping it for the red card. The attacker was certainly
not in control of the ball so there is no goal scoring
opportunity on that side of it. Deffo a subjective one tho.

Looking at it again I don't think it is at all clear that the
ball was going wide of the goal, in fact it looked more likely
to be going in the goal.

Sorry, Whistleblower. The "Dislike" was not intended. I was
horrified to find that the idiot who had given it was me, by
which time it was too late to undo it.

Thank you all. I agree that it all depends if it was going in or
not. If it was then of course red is correct. If not then it’s
       not.

Exactly that. The camera view makes it impossible to tell
however many times you look at it.
The referee certainly didn't waste any time thinking about it !

For me looks like a red card but camera angle doesn’t help

You raise a good point about almost all GK offences wrongly
expected to get a RC these days, due to a lack of understanding
(and commentators!) It’s simply another judgement (like any
other player) as to whether it’s prevented a goal or an obvious
       opportunity.
In this case, the attacker is never getting the ball and 3
defenders would’ve cleared it /beaten him to it anyway. Looks
like it’s going wide to me, but we can’t tell for certain.
Supportable decision, but if going wide, it should be a YC for
       SPA.

Rovers have made no complaints about Lo-Tutala's red card.
However, I thought we had a pretty much stonewall penalty
       turned down at 2-2.

I've seen a better angle which is even more convincing, but I
can't find it. Still, all is well and we are in the play-offs.
