And another weekend where open season has been declared on a
Premier League Official, or tbh probably more than one
No wonder us poor sods at Grass Roots level get such incessant
grief

Tierney on the Spurs game next week I'll personally have to go
to Stockley Park to protest. Surely he's going to get one game,
maybe Villa away. I'd say Brooks and Oliver for the other 2,
well that's what I hope. Knowing my luck it'll be Coote and
Attwell!

Taylor will be more delighted not having to referee Klopp again!
Odious manager to have to put up with, officials must genuinely
dread him, Arteta and co, knowing any small mistake will be
shouted at or whined about in press conferences!

unfair flack for the Areola/Gapko incident. For me, he blows up
as he thinks Areola is hurt and possibly concussed. He dropped
the ball and didn’t stop looking up, so Taylor within his rights
to blow the whistle and avoid a potentially nightmare situation.

I think Taylor would have more credence if he hadn't twice made
the 'get on with it' signal and turned his back to run down the
pitch. It was only when he saw the possibility of a very
contentious goal that he blew his whistle and bringing the
trainers on just looked like a fig leaf for himself.....and not
a particularly covering one either.

Bad behaviour and intemperate language towards a match official
should not be tolerated at any level. However there is a place
for robust criticism, respectfully offered, when a match
official makes errors. When it comes to criticism there is no
open nor closed season for match officials. Those of us who
entered this field were surely aware of that and the higher the
level then the higher the standard which should rightly be
expected.

I rate Taylor, and think he often gets some ridiculous criticism
at times, but I think he’s wrong here.
I accept I may be in the minority, but ‘common sense’ shouldn’t
stretch to rescuing a player who does something stupid. It may
have been seen as controversial, but having so clearly played on
(and the GK clearly had the advantage given), it’s hard to sell
helping him out when he tosses the ball into play like that. The
use of the trainer to help sell it didn’t look good either.
Often an outfield player gets a clear advantage and the next
pass is awful - we don’t rescue them by going back; it’s just
tough luck. GKs are no different - yes it may lead to a goal,
but that’s tough. Pro players, paid so much money, should do the
basics like learn the laws and play to the whistle!
He got criticism for initially playing on / advantage - I think
he was right to, as there is a push to keep the game moving and
GKs continuously take liberties by wasting time / exaggerating.
For example, where he dropped the ball for the ‘free kick’ was
nowhere near right. The original foul was in the goal area.

I'd disagree with this.

The goalkeeper was on the floor for 12 seconds following the
foul - it would have much more sensible (and correct in law) to
give the free kick for the foul as the advantage hadn't
materialised after a few seconds.

I would say in this instance the advantage never materialised, i
am not even sure the goalkeeper would see the advantage signal
from his position on the floor. I think he saw the signal to get
on with it from Taylor and thus assumed Taylor had given the
free kick hence his gesture.

I think this is a likely explanation.

He may well have been better giving a free kick, but having not
done so, I don’t think he can wait so long and then go back,
just because the player makes a blunder.
The GK being on the ground for 12 secs isn’t an issue - they
often do that these days to waste time (exactly what refs this
year have been told to clamp down on).
It’s difficult to justify no advantage occurred. He has the ball
in hand, no opponent anywhere near. If he’s injured, he should
just make a clear signal so ref can stop play (or throw the ball
out, to be returned later). In this case, for me, he messed up
and it’s tough luck.
