someone who I assume was an active or retired referee at the
time that the day a referee allows his integrity to be bought by

into such a place.

Good post but i think you might be slightly wrong about cricket
ask Mr Gattimg about Shakoor Rana in Pakistan. Sadly perceived
poor decisions by home umpires in certain countries was the
reason the ICC brought in neutral umpires for test cricket.
To be honest the Shakoor Rana subject entered my mind
but I wasn't sure if it was that had any relevance but thanks
for pointing that out.

That incident was one of very many in various countries, english
umpires were very rarely criticised but i think Mr Constant
upset a few visiting teams at one stage.

> There has to be very serious action taken against Forest here,
they have borderline accused both the match officials and PGMOL
of corruption. This could have very serious implications on
Stuart Attwell's reputation and cannot be left to go unchecked
or unchallenged.

> This was also put out straight after the game, and doesn't
feel like a tweet a junior social media administrator would be
allowed to post, rather feels like this would have been approved
at the very highest level of the club. Almost as though they
had it lined up before the game was even played in case there
were any controversial decisions go against them.
>
--- End Quote ---
In all walks of life we see, almost daily, people in responsible
positions and positions of authority displaying an appalling
lack of integrity. Members of Parliament, police officers,
police chiefs, senior civil servants, members of the Royal
family, heads of the Post Office, regulatory bodies, Heads of
State, Presidents have all been found wanting on the integrity
front. Why is it asserted so forcefully that no match official
could possibly slip from the high standards set by the
overwhelming majority and on occasion let a marginal decision go
the way he would like it to?
That is a general observation and in no way a specific comment
on any of the decisions made yesterday.
Having said that, if Attwell is "disqualified" from doing Luton
matches due to an affinity with the club, there is no way he
should have been on that game. It wasn't fair on him.
And the key thing there is "all been found wanting on the
integrity front". If people in public office are caught with
their proverbial pants down they are of course called out for it
in the press, but there is absolutely no evidence that Attwell
has done anything at all wrong. As Simon Jordan said today, in
any industry other than football a tweet like that would almost
certainly lead to legal action being taken for libel.
I would suggest empirical evidence points to him having done
something wrong and having performed poorly in his role on the
day. However there is a big difference between being wrong and
lacking integrity or honesty.
My observation above was in response to the numerous outraged
comments that say you can't question a referee's integrity.
Almost as if referees are some superior breed not able to
succumb to temptation and misconduct.
Nemesis I think you, as always, make a good point and add well
needed balance to the debate (and I say that as someone who
doesn't fully share your view). I certainly do not think that
referees integrity cannot be questioned, if my earlier comments
expressed that view I didn't explain myself well. What I think
is that making wrong decisions should not be a basis for the
questioning of integrity. That bar should be far higher, I
suppose I am going with the extraordinary claims require
extraordinary proof. To me a claim of deliberate corruption on
the part of a match official is an extraordinary claim and I
don't think making a mistake is enough evidence to support such
an allegation.

Today it has been announced that Nottingham Forest have been
fined £750,000 for their social media comments.
A massive fine by the usual standards but maybe enough for
appeals to be made involving expensive lawyers.

It doesn't have any bearing on the content of the post, but I
have just noticed that the dates shown in respect of this topic
seem to have lost their way - the earliest comments are shown as
having been made in the course of next week! Not sure if it is
possible or even worthwhile to attempt to correct this, but it
may be regarded as relevant by someone in the future.
