I remember a few years ago there was a concern about the number
of penalty retakes VAR was ordering and a worry that it would
lead to keepers being sent off in a penalty shootout, although I
know a warning has now been added in for a first offence rather
than immediate yellow card. Was this the cause of the change?

This seems eminently reasonable if this is the case. What is not
OK in my view is that cautions are not carried over into the
penalty shootouts. The referee was probably right to warn
Martinez, but what would have happened if it had occurred again?
Another yellow but no red? Imagine the reaction. Surely the game
continues after the final whistle, as evidenced by yellow and
red cards issued for haranguing the officials in the centre
circle and tunnel. So what's the difference?

I thought the fact that the highly-pundits paid were confused by
the yellow card during the shoot-out not resulting in a red was
embarrassing but to see so many on this site unaware of that Law
has astonished me. It is a question that is a staple of Laws of
       the Game tests.

A staple part of the Laws of the game maybe, but I for one was
completely unaware of it. But maybe that has something to do
with the complexities of the Laws now compared with when I was
refereeing, plus my tired old brain not picking up on this
       unusual situation.

It has been confirmed that he will be suspended for the 1st leg
       of the SF

I am sure Lille will be massively comforted by that.

       .
FWIW, I agree with Rustyref, the referee on the night did not
allow himself any thinking time. It’s something I’ve really
learned to take into my game recently, and it really is a
       valuable exercise.

First line not needed. Dave was quite entitled to criticise the
referee's performance and was big enough to apologise for a lack
of awareness of a Law which I, and others on RTR it seems, were
also ignorant of. Leave it at that please.

Very much agreed acme thunderer, you can debate without
