I am very surprised to see Seb Stockbridge appointed to Crewe v
Wrexham, a MASSIVE game for him. This is the second Crewe derby
this season - refereeing Port Vale v Crewe earlier this season
in the carabao cup.

I am not particularly surprised. I've seen the 'Silver Fox mk2'
at Gresty Road on a couple of occasions and he was fine on both
occasions. A calm, experienced EFL referee, I wish Seb and his
team all the best for what should be a massive and raucous
occasion on Saturday lunchtime.

How much of a derby is it and is there much history/bad feeling
between the teams?
The games between Rovers and Wrexham, the closest thing we’ve
got to a derby now had Messrs Woods and Oldham in the middle.
Given Wrexham are already promoted, it’s not a fixture I’d
expect a SG1/2 to be brought in for.
That said there are some strange appointments. Unsure why the
game at Harrogate needs an SG2 for example.
David Rock at Tranmere, not seen him in the middle since our NL
days.

probably helps that we haven’t played them in ages. If Wrexham
weren’t promoted, then I would’ve expected higher authorities to
be brought in.
With regards to your SG2 comments, yes they are weird. Crewe had
John Busby in November against Sutton?? No sense. Then we had
Leigh Doughty against Swindon which again made no sense.

I think Crewe v Wrexham was hyped up when both sides were vying
for automatic promotion, in other words before Crewe went on the
slide. Crewe still need points to be sure of a playoff place and
Wrexham of course are already promoted and are bringing a large
contingent of fans on the 45 -60 minute journey to Gresty Road.
There was also a rumour of the Chester Ultras (halfway between
the two clubs) looking to disrupt proceedings, hence the early
ko, so plenty at stake in Saturday's game. And I'll be there!
I note that another usually dependable EFL referee, Carl Brook,
also has a key game towards the top of L2, Doncaster v Barrow.

First U’s game since the opening day of 19/20 for Darren
Drysdale, I do wonder if that was impacted by having Alan Judge
on our team for a couple of years, who were of course involved
in that incident at Ipswich. Paul Howard keeps the rearranged
Doncaster game, which could be a biggie if we fail to pick up
points and Doncaster continue to.
Big clash for Sunny Gill in league one and another game for
Ruebyn Ricardo in a dead rubber at Sixfields. Carl Brook & Lewis
Smith with the league two picks

I don’t think you can often read much into the SG2 appointments
at this level, feels like it’s often convenience rather than
importance. We had two in a row against Accrington and Harrogate
(Tom Nield and Jeremy Simpson) which were hardly headline
clashes

Not sure whether it's intentional from the powers that be, but
the last time Pompey lifted a trophy back at Wembley in 2019,
Dean Whitestone was the man in charge. Fast forward to 2024 and
Mr Whitestone is back at Fratton Park for Pompey's League One
trophy lift at the weekend!
