Another example of where VAR is needed... so many of these
issues in the Championship lately. Shame we will never have the
facility to expand VAR down.

Same referee at QPR v West Brom when Kipre, the West Brom centre
half made an excellent goal-line save and a corner rather than a
penalty and red card was given. I expect the Baggies are looking
forward to having Mr Eltringham again some time soon !

When decisions like these are close to the edge of the area I
have every sympathy with the referee as it’s virtually
impossible to tell the point of contact with the naked eye. But
this one?! Possibly the worst I’ve ever seen, the player
handling the ball is in line with the edge of the ‘D’. I
genuinely can’t find any mitigating circumstances as to how
Geoff has come to the conclusion that it’s a penalty. Defies all
logic.

I was at the game and it is fair to say that no-one in the
ground thought it was a penalty in real time and everyone was
amazed when he gave it.
I'm not sure how good the assistants view was regarding if it
was handball or not, but I would have thought he could see where
the player was who was adjudged to have handled it.
As mentioned above, when it is close to the edge it can be
difficult to judge exactly, but I don't really know what
happened here as it wasn't close!
Whilst some players will always contest a penalty decision, the
reaction of the Rotherham players was understandable in this
instance, although they protested in a calm way (if thats
possible!)

At the moment the ball is struck the AR needs to monitoring at
the offside line not looking at a player who could have no
impact on any offside decision. I attach no blame to the AR for
failing to correct this decision.
