It would be really interesting to know which is the chief
criterion for getting a trial game at a more senior level. I
guess it must be Observers' reports, always assuming there isn't
any dirty work at the crossroads with favouritism.
Someone I am amazed hasn't been offered a trial is Neil Hair. He
has been outstandingly good on the three times I have seen him,
one of the very best I have seen in Leagues 1 and 2. Clearly
the Observers think otherwise or maybe he has indicated he does
not wish to be considered for promotion and go full time.
Charles Breakspear is another who I think has been unfairly
overlooked if, indeed, he is willing to go higher.

Not the best performance from Scott Oldham and team yesterday,
but not the worst, there was a lot for them to sort out and they
got most things right, but there were several decisions I
       disagreed with.
Scott seems to be a very good communicator and looks pretty in
control in the middle, his awarding of free kicks I found to be
a little inconsistent though, with quite a low bar of tolerance
leading to quite a stop start game I felt. On the contrary, he
missed several yellow cards, with Mingi escaping one of the
clearest yellow cards you’ll see in the first half and some of
our players definitely could have been booked for delaying the
       restart.
The KMI’s all came from the AR2, Shaun Farrer and unfortunately
he only got 1/3 correct. Good spot for the Tovide red, not the
most forceful push, but enough for a red card. Crawley’s first
appeared to be a yard or two offside, it was pretty close so not
going to come down hard on him for that but appears an error.
But the only decision I am very unhappy with was the handling of
our ruled out 4th goal. A header from a corner, I can only
imagine Shaun has seen the keeper on the floor and panicked and
given a foul but there’s absolutely no contact at all, he also
gave it about 4 seconds after we’d scored so think he’s simply
       seen something that wasn’t there.
We also nearly a similar situation as the Gillingham incident
earlier this season when Scott allowed the free kick to be taken
while half our team were by the corner flag - thankfully we got
the counter cleared for a corner but to give a foul late and
then allow them to take it quickly was really poor judgement
       from Scott I feel.
All in all, I think I would have been very frustrated if we
hadn’t won given the above and expected more from a cup final
referee, but they’ll be worse showings.

I thought Simon Mather at Crewe v Grimsby had a great game. Let
the game flow and was consistent throughout. Not much else he
       could’ve done.

I personally think he’s had too much refereeing these past few
weeks. Yes, ok he’s one of the better L1/L2 referees, but 4
games in 9 days including a trip to Wembley is excessive.

I seem to remember that this isn't the first time that Neil Hair
has had time off through injury. Perhaps he has been unfortunate
in this regard and that might be an explanation as to why he
hasn't been a successful candidate for promotion.

Walsall FC (First Team) v Notts County F.C. (First Team)
       Football League 2
       Referee: Tallis, Scott
       Assistant Referee: Head, Ryan
       Assistant Referee: Morris, Kevin
       Fourth Official: Plane, Steven
       [/quote]
A really poor show from team ref at Walsall v Notts Co on
       Saturday.
Not so much from Scott Tallis, who was let down by two very poor
       ARs.
Overall from Scott, he got his one major decision right. A red
for 2 YCs for Walsall's Comley. The first for needlessly nudging
the ball a few yards away, the second for a push in the
shoulder/back as player had past him. Not malicious, more
tactical/cynical and the sort that 99% of the time you would get
a YC if not already on one, yet the sort in the PL they
sometimes 'manage the game' with and seem to not always give a
second YC for. The infuriating inconsistency came when about 10
mins later a Notts Co player committed an identical foul in a
similar situation at the opposite end, no YC. Other issues with
him clearly 'buying' every Notts Co 'injury' in the last 20mins
and a bizarrely low 7mins of second half added time which could
quite easily have been 10-12mins, in truth at that late stage
       didn't really affect the result.
Onto the ARs, deary me. AR1 flagged a perfectly good Walsall
goal as offside at 0-1 in the forat half, which absolutely could
well have affected the result. From a long ball the AR must have
looked late, after the player had made the run as he was the
only player who moved or possibly guessed that how could the
attacker be that far advanced without being offside, so he
flagged? After that, there were a couple of throw ins in quick
succession he clearly got wrong which resulted in players and
the crowd laughing that he could get them so wrong.
AR2 went the opposite way and seemed to not flag for anything!
Including one of those where the attacking side line up for a
free kick with 3 players standing about 5 yards offside in the
box. Well the free kick then goes directly to one of those
attackers to head at goal...no flag. A few other close ball
in/out of play on the goalline he was well behind play for and
one of them that somehow the referee gave as a corner despite no
flag at all to say the ball had gone out!
Overall 8 YCs in a game with not a single bad tackle in seems to
be more the norm now in the EFL rather than the exception and
maybe Scott resorted to cards for match control which he just
       about kept, despite his ARs.
When both sets of fans, at various points in the second half are
singing 'you don't know what you're doing' , you must be
thinking you haven't had the best day as an officiating team.

       Mr Stockbridge
       Peterborough v Fleetwood
Some very tired looking bodies and minds on show at London Road
last night, and unfortunately that included Mr Stockbridge.
A very inconsistent display last night with standard cautions
missed which ending up frustrating players and spectators alike.
One where a Posh player was pulled back around his neck was one
of the most obvious cautions you would ever see and not even a
       word was spoken.
Mr Stockbridge gave 2 penalties for Fleetwood, which although in
the ’soft’ category, were correct in my eyes.
However, how he allowed the wrestling at Posh corners to go
       unpunished was again a mystery.
One player literally had the shirt pulled form his back but
again Mr Stockbridge didn’t even acknowledge it.
It could be his relaxed style, but it came over as tired and
       uninterested.
Did play some standard advantages, after some quite cynical
Fleetwood fouling, but again didn’t go back to caution the
player or even have a word, until of course a Peterborough
       player did and came back.
I thought the Posh caution was correct actually, but based on
his previous threshold, it was so inconsistent to be untrue.
On a positive note, he played the correct amount of additional
time, but that didn’t make up for what was a very disappointing
       performance.
Mr Stockbridge is normally viewed as a ‘safe pair of hands’,
hopefully the summer break will do him good, as you would
certainly not describe him as such after last night.

Really good from Carl Brook last night at Colchester, I remember
being a little disappointed last time we saw him but he was back
       to his usual impressive performance.
Good advantage played for the first goal, well done on spotting
the Grimsby dive in the second half, even if it was one of the
easier ones and my favourite decision of the night, reversing a
throw in after he’d twice told the Grimsby player to take it
where he was stood - he cuts out nonsense by working really well
       with the players I find.
Not sure about the red card, didn’t have a great view of it live
and can’t tell much from the replay so will trust his judgement
that it was dangerous enough for a red. My only negative would
be he should have booked Hornby for timewasting earlier and
perhaps a minute or two light on the added time, but overall,
another really strong performance from Carl and team.
