Most people on here are well aware the rule exists, what is
argued is whether the rule is sensible. My opinion is, it is
not, for the simple reason that it could put a referee under
unnecessary scrutiny in the event of a controversial event.
Likewise, just as Madley was strangely switched, in midweek,
from one relegation battle to another, because of his allegiance
to Huddersfield. This weekend we have the situation where a self
confessed Sheffield Wednesday fan, will be in control of a
relegation affected game at Leeds.
Where is the sense in possibly leaving a referees integrity open
for question?

Agreed. A tricky situation, particularly at this time of the
season. I am sure that most if not all referees at the top level
have allegiance to at least one club, even if it is only from
childhood days. If I were a PL referee and as an avowed Crystal
Palace fan who are still in the PL relegation mix, I suspect I
would be knocked out of contention for not one but six out of
the ten PL games this weekend, all of which involve clubs who
are in the relegation mix. And this would continue until the
Palace are safe (or sorry). Or am I talking a load of baloney as
I often do?

I didn't say I agreed with it, just that it was abolished years
ago. In terms of the postcode rule I found it ridiculous Keith
Stroud couldn't referee AFCB when he lived in Dorset but could
when he moved to Hampshire & actually lived closer to the
ground, as an example. It simply made no sense whatsoever. I
agree 100% that any appointment that can potentially leave a
referees integrity open to question is a poor appointment,
whether that be due to where they live or their allegiance to a
particular team. They need to actually adopt a common sense
rule, but we all know common sense has been abolished...

Obviously (as you can tell by my username) I'm not exactly
unbiased but I've taken a full 24 hours at least to try work out
what has happened....can anyone actually see how Rebecca Welch
has seen a handball in the Bristol Huddersfield game? As much as
I'm not complaining about anything else particularly in the
game, she was consistently happy to hand out cautions, and very
lenient regarding time (I really don't mind that)..she gets
herself in a brilliant position (after 100 mins so fair play to
her) I can't help but think she's 'given it for clout'.
I have to also share that I am very aware that male officials
also make interesting decisions (West Brom last week) but after
seeing her high profile appointments to the PL and Olympics, I
feel the question should be asked just like it would be to any
male official.
