Ben Speedie - Doncaster v Walsall.
A few relatively minor quibbles but overall a solid enough
performance.
4 YCs, all correct IMO even if the first Doncaster one was
loudly booed by the home fans. One of those where a player
pretends to not hear the whistle and carries on dribbling the
ball although in this case took a couple of touches and went a
few yards too many for the referee to ignore it.
A couple of tight looking ball over/not over the line incidents
for the ARs to judge, both seemed correct no goal calls based on
replays I saw. First one was a header from a corner bounced down
off bar and onto line and back out. AR would have been bang in
line as it was a corner. Second one a Doncaster inswinging free
kick either parried by Walsall GK or blocked by defender on
line. Either way, didn't look over the line to me and again from
the nature of the freefree kick AR would have been on or near
the goal line to judge.
Added time seemed strange. First half the only stoppage was a
2-3 min break after around 15 mins, which the commentator
suggested was a Ramadan/break the fast stoppage, and one goal
scored, for which 3 was shown on the board and exactly 3 played,
seemed about right.
Second half before the 90' was 1 goal scored, 4 separate breaks
for substitutions, one of which came after well over 1min
stoppage for an injury. There was 5 shown on the board at 90',
which seemed light as Mr Speedie obviously only counted just the
bare minimum for these, rather than also accounting for adding
anything for the unnecessary amount of time he took to to allow
play to restart for throw ins (what's the point of the multiball
system to speed the game up if you are only going to use the one
ball?) , free kicks from the exact blade of grass and corners
after seemingly finding different players to warn at every
single one!)
After the 90', there was 1 goal and 1 more sub made, and 6:20
was actually played. Earlier in the season this second half
would definitely have resulted in nearer 10 being played than 6.

I didn’t see all of our game yesterday but thought Ben Atkinson
awarded Colchester a very generous penalty. Nothing out the
ordinary jostling and shirtpulling we see at every set piece,
but he obviously saw something he didn’t like and wanted to
clamp down. Probably fairly, he need not worry about awarding as
many penalties as he likes to Colchester - that’s something like
our last 7 missed including shootouts! He also waved away a
couple of other appeals correctly.
There was a bit of confusion about some bookings though, with a
yellow in the 72nd minute shown with some debate as whether it
went to Knoyle or Byrne. Knoyle was then booked in injury time
but not sent off - I think he booked Byrne originally so all is
above board but we’ll see if there’s any comeback from that.
There was also some outrage from Colchester when he failed to
show a yellow to the already booked Powell for a foul on Mingi -
I think Olaofe fouled him first which probably spared Powell but
I would have expected Olaofe to be booked.

I notice Chris Pollard has not refereed a game since Forest
Green v Harrogate in mid-January. An injury perhaps?

Umpiring tennis matches somewhere in the world perhaps ? It's
hard to see how a single individual can pursue two top level
officiating careers in the same timeframe but kudos to Mr Miles
if he has managed to. I suspect that if he gets right to the top
of either sport one will have to take precedence.

Deo Gratias !
Perhaps that is a trifle unfair on Mr Young; I wish him a speedy
return and many successful matches, not involving Ipswich Town
FC
