Chelsea v Burnley - Darren England (John Brooks)

Most of you will probably view it for the first time later at
MOTD, but I really don't like the penalty given to Chelsea by
England. I think there might even have been room for a VAR
intervention. Yes there is arm on the shoulder from Assignon on
Mudryk but I don't really see any force or pushing action. There
might be some contact futher down as well, but not impactful
enough for a player to go to ground, even at speed.
I understand Kompany's frustation, even if there is obviously a
degree to that as well, and his red card was justified.
Regarding the 2yc to Assignon, I think it's quite clear once the
foul is given, and you could also make an argument for DOGSO no
attempt to play the ball if you also think it's a foul, but it's
certainly something that adds to the frustation

I thought VAR had a bad game. Took forever to rule out the
Disasi “goal” for handball but in doing so there was a clear
foul on him by the Burnley player. So it should have been no
goal but a penalty IMO.
The penalty given was incredibly soft, I don’t think it is a
foul at all.
Very lax on time wasting by the Burnley keeper throughout the
game.

Not a penalty for me, England fell for the touch on the
shoulder. Had to be a second yellow when he gives it

Poor penalty decision by England, Mudryk had totally overrun the
ball and the touch was minimal. I'd say that ticked the box for
clear and obvious and he should've been sent to the monitor by
Brooks

When was the last time a referee went to the monitor and didn’t
overturn the decision? I feel like the bar is too high for that.
The VAR could send the referee over, with guidance rather than
influence. “You may want to take another look to see if a
different angle helps you to confirm your decision”, rather than
adding a lot of pressure in having to go with the VAR.

That isn't what VAR is for. They can only recommend a review
for a clear and obvious error, therefore, by definition,
referees should only being sent to the screen when the original
decision they made was very obviously wrong.

Sort of why I came to comment. Does it have to be a 2YC? I‘ve
never liked the recent trend that almost all PKs end up being a
YC as well. I’m not convinced there’s enough in it for a foul
(forward goes over far too easily), but even if it is a penalty,
at worst it’s SPA and that ‘attack’ is replaced by the PK only
under the recent law changes.

card almost to sell the PK decision, rather than for an actual
cautionable offence.

I'd agree in general that for some time referees have often
shown yellow cards when a penalty has been awarded when it
hasn't seemed necessary. But based on the description of a hand
on the shoulder, could this be described as an attempt to play
the ball or not?

It is one of those that whether it was a foul or not is
debatable. But once awarded, and given the fact there was no
attempt to play the ball, it has to be SPA or DOGSO.
