It does seem strange that a triallist is going straight into a
League 1 fixture; it's a game where would would perhaps have
expected James Bell to be a more likely appointment. However,
good luck to him and I hope he makes the most of his chance.
Sadly the days of 1st April being reflected in some humorous
combination of appointments have gone, at least I couldn't see
any. The humour bypass operation has clearly been a resounding
success.

To be fair Bristol R v Shrewsbury has very little, other than
professional pride, riding on it, so may in fact be a perfect
game for your first match

I first thought this was a misprint for James Bell but clearly
not. I think Elliot's L1 appointment must be a first for a
triallist in their first game, and even those on the EFL list
normally do a few L2 games before moving into L1. However, I
agree fully with RCG that there is probably not a lot riding on
BR v Shrewsbury, unlike some of the games at the top and bottom
in L2. I wish Elliot all the best.

Huge huge game for Will Finnie at Fratton Park in front of the
Sky cameras at the top of League One. Very pleased for him with
this appointment, I think he's deserving of a high profile game
at this level and stage of the season - always been very
impressed when I've seen him in the past.

Sunny Gill - Colchester vs Newport
I want to preface this as I like to think my match reports tend
to be quite fair and often complementary. However, not for the
first time, I come away from Sunny Gill’s game wondering how
he’s progressed as far as he has.
His decision making isn’t too bad, I think he gets swayed by
shouts and screams from players on occasions but in general,
there were only a few fouls I disagree with.
However, I find his game management ability at an incredibly
poor standard, not for the first time. He seems to show no
interest in refereeing what’s in front of him and when games get
tricky, he shows no interest in getting involved. A few examples
were a scuffle breaking out and he’s more interested in getting
substitutions on. Those substitutions were on the far touchline
to the benches and he didn’t pay any attention to hurrying them
off or, even better, getting them to take 3 steps to their right
and leave the pitch on the nearest side. As for his timewasting
management, that was non existent and completely against the
directives at the start of the season. He just seems to want to
slide through games as quickly and as quietly as possible and I
am yet to see him get any sort of control when the game get more
difficult to handle.
I really don’t like to refbash, but having seen Sunny multiple
times now, I really dread seeing his name next to Colchester’s
on the appointments. Hopefully i’ve just had rotten luck with
him but I really don’t have a positive view on his ability at
this time

Bradford City FC (First Team) v Tranmere Rovers FC (First Team)

Referee: Watkins, Richie
Assistant Referee: Mulraine, Kevin
Assistant Referee: Clayton, Simon
Fourth Official: Lehane, Jacob
A fairly meaningless lower mid table clash is ideal for a
triallist at FL level. While a bug prevented my attendance in
person, IFollow came to the rescue. Generally, I felt Mr Watkins
had a good game, kept up with play and positioned himself well,
a couple of decent advantages and nothing much in the way of
flash-points to stamp down on. Perhaps he gave free-kicks to
Bradford's Kavanagh for minimal contact too easily and some
might have produced a second yellow for Rovers' Norris high boot
making contact with an opponent's head albeit the player hit was
out of his line of vision. The best of 3 triallists I've seen in
the middle for Rovers this season.

I've seen him twice and on both occasions there was pretty
little evidence of a referee who is reputedly at the top of his
cohort and moving inexorably towards promotion. His style is
understated and that's perfectly fine if full control is
maintained but I would describe Sunny Singh Gill as a "taking
the least line of resistance" referee. On neither occasion did
he begin to impose himself on the match so at times events
appeared to be going on around him from which he appeared
entirely detached. Maybe this is just an impression he gives and
he is actually fully engaged and the players are hanging on his
every whistle and word but somehow I rather doubt it.

A reasonable summary, and one with which I concur. I think it's
fair to say the diversity campaign has done him no harm.
