Interesting incident in this game, being reported on social
media and sports news. It would appear that Rugby TMO’s get the
full broadcast commentary when making decisions and an incident
on Saturday was spotted by the commentators but not by TMO. The
decision was made by the TMO to ignore this, presumably to
maintain impartiality, but at the possible consequence of making
an incorrect decision.
I feel a bit of sympathy for the TMO as they probably thought
the optics would look bad if they only checked a decision after
the commentators expressed opinion, but I think it would have
been better if they conclusively reviewed it in full rather than
choosing to ignore it. I would also say that’s a major flaw in
the TMO system if they can hear coverage and not just comms with
the on field team.
I’m by no means a big rugby fan so happy for someone with better
knowledge to correct me if i’ve got anything wrong! The player
was already on a yellow card but with the final score as it was,
hopefully it didn’t do any major change to the match as a whole.
I dread to think the widespread reaction if this happened for a
“top 6” club in football…

There is some discussion as to whether TMO could and should hear
commentary (to me they have enough to do without listening to
Healey)
In any other match, at any other time, its a YC and therefore
should be red. I am sure Christophe Ridley will be disappointed
when they went through the game at HQ today

I have not seen this incident and so cannot comment. What I
would say is that it is important that the TMO is seen to be
independent and acts accordingly. The TMO was in a sense stuck
between two stools. What I would say is that Austin Healey often
talks rubbish especially in regards to the Laws and I also feel
that the headlines highlighting concerns about protecting the
players are jumping on the band wagon. This can only have been a
YC at most - there has been no citing - and you see many YC for
foul play and this appears to be another possibility. I trust
and believe lessons will be learnt so that the TMO is never put
in this position again.
On another note, Mathieu Raynal has announced that he will
retire from refereeing at the end of the season at the age of
42. An excellent referee in my view and I wish him well in his
retirement.
