An interesting view. What would be fascinating to know ( though
of course I doubt we ever will ) is whether the current SG1
cohort looked up to Jon Moss as an exemplar of first rate
refereeing practice and accomplishment when they were
officiating colleagues with him, either in SG1 or making their
way into it. If they did, then receiving critique and training
is straightforward but if they did not then I imagine some
tensions may have arisen. Based on no empirical evidence but
just a feeling, I think Howard Webb and Andre Marriner would
elicit a natural respect from their peers.
I think it's very difficult to go from being part of a cohort to
being a person offering a critique of ones fellows. There would
have to be clear and great respect for the person and their
record for the enterprise to work. I know from my own
professional in service training, it's far easier to accept a
critique from someone whose work one has admired rather than
someone who has been set up as an expert or enabler.

I heard from a reliable source, that he was not well respected
within the ranks. I met him once at an RA meeting. I didn’t take
to him which is unusual, I put this in context I have met a lot
of premier league referees, and always found them thoughtful,
inspiring and have empathy for other referees. It did not
surprise when I heard he had left.

Interesting to see reasons why jon left his position.
Maybe there was a bit of head teacherness in the way he
presented himself to the referees that wasnt liked, guesswork on
my behalf.
It is interesting to see England and Scott with games of recent.

I always had the impression that Jon Moss got further up the
refereeing ranks than his abilities merited. I wasn't sure he
was Premier League material at the time, but proved he was
capable at that level over time. Still, I don't think he was
good enough to have reffed the big games & cup finals. In his
book, Clatts claimed that both Moss & Martin Atkinson were "very
political". These things are always hard to prove & know unless
you're on the inside & it's clear that Clatts didn't like said
referees, but he was entitled to his view.
However, it's clear that Moss got his SG1 promotion & his big
appointments during the reign of Mike Riley as PGMOL refs' boss.
Riley also appointed Moss to his role at PGMOL post retirement.
Riley would argue that Moss got his roles on merit, but many
would probably disagree. I guess this kind of thing does happen
in many work environments, but it's clear that Howard Webb
doesn't view Moss in the same way as Riley.
