Referee: Drysdale, Darren
Assistant Referee: Buckley, Karl
Assistant Referee: Brown, Conor
Fourth Official: Freeman, Lee
A solid performance from Darren who wore the Y*llow shirt! Let
some softer fouls go for both which was good and vastly used his
voice to calm things down. Good rapport with players and a very
deep sounding whistle!
Overall, a cracking display from the 3rd team in terrible windy
conditions.

Unfortunately I thought Simon Mather and team got quite a bit
wrong yesterday at Mansfield. They’ll be worse showings this
season but they never really looked fully assured and in
control.
Really good game that had some messy periods whilst Colchester
were trying to manage Mansfield’s play by taking their time over
restarts. A couple of yellows for that, a deserved one for
Ihionvien but a harsh one for Hall. Goodman and McGeehan could
both have been booked for worse offences than Hall. 3 and 6
minutes seems light and should have been an extra couple in each
half.
Then 2 pretty major (in terms of the result, certainly)
mistakes, in my view, in the second half. First, AR2 Grant
Taylor awarding a corner to Mansfield, which they scored from.
From my view behind the goal and on TV replays, the ball hasn’t
gone out of play and I don’t think it’s a really close one
either. Then just as the 90 minutes ticked over, Mansfield were
denied a penalty for a tangle of legs on a loose ball. I think
it should have been a penalty and I think Simon may have been
impaired by Mansfield’s 40. His original position was good but I
wonder if he should have moved sidewards sooner to get a clear
view. Not a “stonewall”, but definitely seen them given and I
would have been aggrieved if it went against my team.

Fourth Official: Simpson, Scott
Third FL outing for Mr Parkinson. While I'm always rooting for a
new official trying to progress at a higher level, think there
were a number of concerns about his officiating and decision
making yesterday. which he will need to work on. The aim of
trying to let the game flow was laudable, but when it involved
obvious fouls being missed in the build-up to an attacking move,
on one occasion a strong push on the Rovers defending full-back
and another a grab on the defender's shirt unbalancing him then
it was fortunate that these attacks came to nothing. He was
well-positioned to disallow a Crawley goal for a push, though
perhaps would have been better served by blowing up at the point
of the infringement rather than waiting for the ball to reach
the back of the net?
Prior to the game the Crawley manager had remarked on the high
number of penalties TRFC had been awarded this season. I've no
idea if the referee was aware of that comment, if so, trust it
would have played no part in Mr Parkinson's decision making, but
it feels an inappropriate remark to make before a match. As it
happened, there were 3 decisions for a possible Rovers penalty,
all rejected;
The last was a ball hit into a ruck of players may have hit a
hand, no award correct call
The middle penalty claim was when Connor Jennings had kept the
ball in on the goal-line only to be tripped. Referees call but
have seen them awarded for similar.
The first penalty shout was also for handball. I was sideways
on, roughly behind the nearside AR, so while could see contact
wasn't sure exactly where it hit. Mr Parkinson was more
centrally positioned and would have a clear view. I've now seen
footage and the contact was clearly by the hand. The arm was
clearly away from the body, was it far enough to count as an
unnatural position? It would be interesting to know the thought
processes leading to this penalty claim being turned down. To my
mind usually a spot kick would be awarded here and it seemed the
strongest of the three claims.
Finally it looked like Mr Parkinson's hair had a gingerish hue.
A small group on the current FL list, could only think of Messrs
Busby and Young.

Interesting post, thank you Boz. Sounds a bit like a repeat of
Mr Parkinson's recent visit to Crewe with 'obvious fouls being
missed' featuring at the Alex as well. On the penalties, it is
obviously difficult to reach a view based on brief TV
highlights, but one was based on the ball striking the defender
from close range, and I think it would have been difficult to
have awarded a penalty in this situation. Mr Parkinson's hair
certainly seemed more gingery than when we saw him at Crewe, and
maybe someone has suggested he should add a gingery hue to make
him look younger. More work needed backstage it seems before he
is ready for regular outings on the EFL.
