Paul Howard and team saved a trip to Essex this evening with a
local official postponing the game. 3 in a row at home now
called off for us…
With rain forecast in these parts until late afternoon sadly
there was unlikely to be any improvement. Fortunately the timing
of the postponement has prevented a number of wasted journeys.
That’s certainly part of it and you’re absolutely right about an
early decision but we’ve also got a lot of pitch problems. Where
we are now, we’re looking at 6 home games in April (could be 7
if this weekend is off) which seems particularly ambitious when
the pitch is already struggling and that’s without any further
heavy spring rain.

Martin Woods - Walsall v Barrow, a decent-ish performance.
A penalty awarded to Barrow for a trip, looked correct from my
view, even if it was at the other end. There was a long pause
before whistling for it which I assume was waiting for
confirmation from AR1 over comms as there was no flag.
3 YCs awarded , all correct. Was possibly lenient to Walsall's
#18 who having been earlier booked (for a retaliatory late
tackle on a player who had fouled him so late, a minute or so
previously, that was so late no officials spotted it) was then
spared a second yellow for late-ish shoulder on a defender as he
had cleared the ball. Not that dangerous but you have seen YCs
for a lot less and Martin appeared to go for the 'man management
route' more typical of the PL than the EFL I find, rather than
issue a second YC to which nobody would have really complained
or been surprised at.
One odd incident, deep in injury time a Walsall shot clearly
deflected wide and after initially signalling for a goal kick
and running backward 10 yards or so appeared to give in to the
protests from players and crowd and award a corner. AR2 was on
opposite side so not sure he would have had much input? Came to
the right decision if maybe the wrong way to award it, and
luckily (for Martin and for Barrow) nothing ultimately came from
the corner or I imagine it would have been quite controversial.

Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Sutton United FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Humphries, Andrew
Assistant Referee: Cunliffe, Mark
Assistant Referee: Carney, Emily
Fourth Official: Guest, Danny
To say it was a comical performance is one way of putting it.
Let’s start with the positives. Fit, positioning, signalling and
whistling all good - what you expect from a referee. Now, onto
the negatives. There were several injuries in the first half
(one I will talk about) and 2 of them were head injuries. He
didn’t stop play until the ball went out of play. Why? As a
result of these injuries, 7 minutes was added on - the first
half seemed to go on forever! One KMI that was very very
questionable happened around the 25th min. Crewe attacker and
Sutton goalkeeper both running for a bouncing ball - the keeper
puts his foot up high to kick the ball which he does barely, but
also catches our attacker on the head. Andrew sees this
incident, goes to blow then doesn’t and signals for a Crewe
throw. From my POV and from what I’ve seen off X (twitter) the
keeper does make contact with the attacker. How this wasn’t a
foul never mind a potential red card is appalling. I reckon the
goal keeper had karate lessons in the morning and was warming
up. Anyway moving on, he missed several other fouls first half
and gave some very very very soft ones. At HT, he went off to a
ring of boos from the Crewe faithful.

Second half, slightly better. Good work from AR2 Emily Carney
on seeing that the ball had crossed the line for the Crewe goal.
One yellow that was strange was booking our #25 for starting a
small mass con. He did book the Sutton player as well but he
identified the wrong person for Crewe. It was actually our #21
who started it and he didn’t get booked so not sure how he
could’ve got it wrong with the 4O and AR1 right there. A poor
debut in the EFL, and if that’s the standard coming from the
National League then Christ we need help!

I was not there again last night but was about to post on the
incident with the Sutton goalie which appeared in the BBC
Football online report. Sorry to hear that Andrew's debut didn't
go particularly well and I'm sure things will get better with
experience. I wish him and all the other EFL triallists well.

Not a Derby favourite given his past performances
Perhaps that has changed after last night? Hard to tell from the
footage if the first YC was handball though the referee
well-placed to make the call. The second YC for the Reading
player looked harsh, if there was contact it was fairly minimal.
Was the opening goal offside, did the Derby player handle the
ball before the foul that drew the penalty? It did feel that the
Rams got the rub of the green in this one.

Tranmere Rovers FC (First Team) v Mansfield Town F.C. (First
Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Toner, Ben
Assistant Referee: Harty, Thomas
Assistant Referee: Smith, Daniel
Fourth Official: Oldham, James
Generally Mr Toner is viewed as a safe pair of hands, but felt
he wasn't at his best in the first half, in particular
penalising some minimal contact yet playing on after a blatant
shove on Rovers left-back Wood, which the nearside AR, Mr
Harty?, also well-placed to see. He was arguably too patient
with Rovers' Walker at the end of the half who bent his ear for
some time after the h/t whistle, surprised a YC didn't get
produced. There was one incident in the second half where Rovers
Jennings went down after apparently being caught in the face by
a boot after he'd lowered his head trying for a header. Mr Toner
played on for some time rather than blowing up immediately. It
was clearly seen from the conversation between referee and
player afterwards, with the official miming a lowered head that
he was aware of the incident, so would have expected an early
halt for Jennings to be checked out.
There were a number of positives too, good fitness,
communication with the players, exerting control with a sequence
of free-kicks and YCs midway through the second half when
things were threatening to bubble over. One nice piece of
team-work where the nearside AR flagged for an obvious handball
the referee wouldn't have seen as the player was facing away
from him.
