I think a part of it is and I seen a feature on it on sky sports
earlier today, basically the PGMOL are trying to fast track as
many diversity referees through the system from grassroots to
the premier league so that could have something to do with it

Given that every Premier League match requires three referees
(on-field, 4thers and VAR) and three ARs (2 x on-field and an
AVAR) an expansion of the panel is not such a bad idea. It
might prevent burn-out and will reduce the instances of referees
high-tailing it from a game on Saturday to another on Sunday.
We would not ask a player to do that, neither should a match
official.

He was, I worked with him several times. He came late to the
Football League, but thoroughly deserved the promotion and has
clearly passed on the refereeing genes to both sons!

Jarnail was always a pleasure to work with - no sides to him
(unlike plenty of others) and a team player who just seemed to
enjoy what he was doing Underrated based on what I saw.
It’d be naive to think that Sunny isn’t being pushed, but I’m
frankly just glad to see the previous iceberg-slow system
seemingly at an end. If we want people ready to take over, we
have to give people a go. Just a shame that other good refs
could’ve benefited from this kind of system in previous years

A really good post arbitre anglais, I agree it is now about
flying the diversity flag …. Which great it’s good for a
overhall of the old system !
But majority of those refs now pushed super quick, and where by
we use to have the cream of refereeing floating in the premier
league, it’s now more the top 2 (Tay and Oliver) and then the
rest which range from good to poor ! But I’m comfortable with
that, but by no means do we have a crop of excellent officials

I actually think the optimum is somewhere in between. Used to be
almost a closed shop and painfully slow - even when there was a
promotion, it often had a whiff of nepotism and face fitting.
Lots of good refs missed out waiting and waiting. At least now,
if some are pushed for diversity as well as ability, then at
least it’s purposeful. However, as young refs who’ve only just
done championship matches, would it have been a problem if Singh
/ LSmith has waited until next season to gain that bit more
experience, perhaps doing more PL 4ths? But if the two ways, I’d
say let’s get people through.

Agree we wouldn't ask a player to play or a referee to be
on-field on 2 consecutive days, however I see no problem with
say an on field referee on a Saturday game in London or the
South, then being a VAR on a Sunday , or vice versa. I don't
think that is excessive at all to ask of full time working
employees.

In my honest opinion this is going to become a slippery slope
after this Sky interview was released because people from non
ethnic minorities will now believe there is no point of them
striving for excellence because the PGMOL are creating little
groups like this where officials won’t have to work as hard as
other but have it handed to them on a plate as they now need to
fit the bill.

The Premier League is an outlier in Europe though in terms of
referees doing on field and VAR on the same weekend. In most
major European leagues, referee’s do one or the other but not
both.

wish Sunny all the best this afternoon at Selhurst Park and
