Jarnail must be very proud.
I never saw Jarnail officiate but I’m sure he has endless words
of wisdom and profound encouragement for Sunny on his first
game.
Jarnail never courted controversy on any match reports I read
and was a very decent stalwart in the Football League for many
years.

Never remember him reffing Fulham, was he a (not so secret) fan,
or was that because he was based in London at the time?

He was, I worked with him several times. He came late to the
Football League, but thoroughly deserved the promotion and has
clearly passed on the refereeing genes to both sons!

Having been massively unimpressed with his performance at
Portman Road this season (and others in the National League as
little as two years ago), I ought to be surprised. I'm not.

Don’t want to go full Chris Wilder but I think this is the third
time this season Luton have had a “first timer”. Good luck to
the guy and I really wishes that he has a credible match, but
this is a really important match in the relegation race now. It
doesn’t feel the right place for a test game.
That being said, the other two both put in very credible
performances and in light of recent events, perhaps it’s not the
worst news in the world!

And the second time for the Palace following Lewis Smith's
recent visit to Selhurst Park (his second PL game). I was
concerned about Lewis being i/c of a 6-pointer v Burnley, but by
all accounts, he acquitted himself quite well that afternoon,
and I am hoping for similar from Sunny this weekend.

I have no view on Mr Gill as I have not seen him ref. With the
age profile of SG1 only Graham Scott seems close to retirement
and Barrott has in effect replaced him. Six others (including
Gill) have had trial games, so unless other established refs go
or the pool expanded, there are bound to be some
disappointments. How these are managed is paramount to ensure
confidence is not knocked. The promotion of Bond in particular
appears odd from last year, given the profusion of promotions
this year. I am clearly missing something.

Valid observation. It, of course, depends on the purpose behind
the trials. Is it to quickly elevate undeniable and outstanding
talent (i.e. Barrott and to a slightly lesser extent Smith J
and slightly lesser again Smith L) or is it to fly the diversity
flag, not necessarily a bad flag to fly.
Just two years ago Gill was refereeing at Wealdstone, now he's
off to the Palace with just eight Championship games under his
belt. This would suggest an almost unprecedented level of talent
which I would be surprised if it were to match the observations
of those who have seen matches during his whirlwind elevation.
By all means correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Couldn’t agree more with the post by Nemesis - to get be awarded
a Premier league middle after just a season and a half on the
NL, and having only been appointed to 8 championship games must
be some sort of record - can’t recall the likes of Clattenburg,
Webb or even Oliver, regarded by most as greats of the game,
being awarded a game this soon in their careers
Makes you wonder why, if he has this sort of talent, and has
been refereeing since he was 17 ( albeit with a rest period
until he was 23 ) why it has taken so long to recognise this
talent
