I was laughing at that! Hopefully a more experienced referee
next week at Doncaster.

Backhouse is another referee who seems to be hampered by
injuries - a couple of seasons ago he was picking up great
appointments and featured in the Championship appointments
aswell and was destined for big things but he got injured was
out for a while and seems to be hampered with them in recent
times A shame as I thought he was excellent when he first
burst onto the scene

Although he has made it to SG2 now!

A typically steady performance from Sam Purkiss at Walsall v
Doncaster yesterday.
General control and foul detection good and consistent. Nothing
remotely like a KMI to report. Was 5 YCs, all to Doncaster, one
for a foul seemed fair, one for dissent and then the last 3 were
all for fouls after 85 mins as it got a bit niggly as Doncaster
players had a few fairly crude hacks with Walsall trying to run
the clock down with a succession of throw ins and corners.
Small frustration with Sam (partly in relation to the wrestling
pen/no pen at Crewe mentioned above) was that on almost every
corner/free kick he had words with players around pushing,
shoving, holding, yet on occasions it did continue when ball
came in, nothing was ever given, either way.
A small mention for AR2, listed as Jacob Graham, who looked very
very young (maybe more of a sign I’m getting old?!) and wondered
if anyone knew how old he actually is? Appeared to have a good
game with numerous offside calls including a disallowed Walsall
goal but there didn’t seem any complaints at any of the
decisions from the crowd who in line with him.

Couldn't tell you how old he is, but he's the son of former EFL
assistant Paul Graham.

I was feeling a little indifferent with Ben Toner at Fratton
Park - seemed to single handedly turn a competitive game into
one that could've spilled over due to the volume of YCs issued.
Lots of little - in my view, needless fouls given both ways
before a really positive advantage played for Saydee to score
the winner.

Tranmere Rovers v Sutton Utd
Referee Ruebyn Ricardo
I was not at this game, but while there has been some favourable
comment about Mr Ricardo on these boards, that opinion was not
shared by the Prenton Park faithful at the weekend. I haven't
had the time or inclination to watch the full footage yet, so
have largely confined these remarks to the brief highlights
footage, containing the key incidents.
There were 3 YCs, apparently all for dissent against Rovers
players in the opening 18 minutes or so. Surprising, as Rovers
aren't a particularly gobby team, but haven't seen the first two
so hard to assess their merits. The third was against Harvey
Saunders for protesting the lack of a penalty award for
suggested hand-ball as the ball was cleared by a grounded
defender on the goal-line. Mr Ricardo was well-placed on the
edge of the penalty-box to make a determination, the clip
doesn't show clearly where contact was made, so I would go along
with the referee's decision and the YC inevitable.
In the second half, Mr Ricardo did award a penalty to the home
team, which looked like a fair award, a rather clumsy bundling
over of Saunders by the Sutton defender. However, Sutton's Clay
protested the award as vociferously as Saunders had the
rejection, but no YC produced, which felt inconsistent to Mr
Ricardo's first half approach.

Crewe management always seem to be moaning at the Officials,
when they play badly.

I think you will find it is. Also true of virtually every other
