Maybe Lewis Smith had a better game than some observers thought?
Dermot Gallagher had no problems and the Sunday Times report
said nothing negative. Maybe it was the players and coaches that
were the problem? In those cases referees are the fall guy.
Just an observation / contrary view for balance.
I'd like to think that the opinion of myself and the other
Fulham fans on here are seen to be objective, as our view seemed
to be have been mirrored by both Fulham and Villa fans on social
media. Whilst the incorrect VAR line-drawing and the non-review
of penalties cannot be attributed to Smith, the failure to award
a penalty can be, as can the failure to award an obvious corner
or penalise a deliberate back pass. The time-wasting and
time-management is also the responsibility of the ref to deal
with and he didn't deal with either satisfactorily. Much like
with David Coote at Luton vs. Manchester United, the whole game
management and control fell away towards the end, leading to a
free-for-all of fouls and a run of yellow cards. TBH I never
rated Dermot Gallagher that highly anyway as a referee and even
less so if clearly he didn't watch the game yet made such a
sweeping statement. 25,000 Fulham and Villa fans are unlikely to
be wrong.

I was VERY jealous of Missy BMB having Jarred Gillett until I
scrolled down and saw Michael Oliver for us at Old Trafford.
Whilst it may have been pre-arranged, I'm pretty shocked to see
Lewis Smith with another PL game after the disaster at the
Cottage on Saturday.
Disaster being the operative word. While some appointments this
season have been refreshing there have also been some baffling
ones and none bigger than this. Quite simply ridiculous imho.

It seems pretty poor management to give lewis who is
inexperienced as it is, another crucial game straight after last
week, which by all accounts wasn’t his best game. I do worry
that lewis won’t be allowed the time to develop properly, and
will instead be rushed through, which would potentially hinder
his development.

On reflection, I now agree that the appointment of Lewis Smith
to the Palace v Burnley game is ill-advised. If Burnley lose,
they can effectively kiss goodbye to the PL after just one
season. If Palace lose, they really will be in the thick of the
relegation struggle and, with a new manager in post, the
supporters will not take too kindly if they don't get off to a
winning start, particularly if a draw or defeat is mired in
controversy, be it down to Lewis or someone else in the
officiating team. When Michael Salisbury refereed his first PL
game at Selhurst Park, Palace v Villa, he showed his
inexperience, with Atko looking concerned on the touchline, and
the Villa milked this for all they were worth, running out 2-1
winners. I am certain that both managers on Saturday will know
that Lewis is very inexperienced and I hope that things do not
get out of hand as they appear to have done at Craven Cottage
last weekend.

In the various discussions about who may imminently or less
imminently be heading for a permanent SG1 berth, Sam Barrott,
Josh Smith, Sam Allison, Rebecca Welch, Lewis Smith; little
mention is made of Bobby Madley. Like or dislike his
officiating, he is very experienced at the most senior level and
seemed to be very highly thought of by the authorities before
his fall from grace so I am surprised his rehabilitation appears
not have led him back to SG1...or am I misreading the situation
and that is precisely where he is bound ?

I suspect that they are going down a different path and maybe
Madley isn’t the answer.
Perhaps there is some goings on behind the scenes that we aren’t
privy too as humble outsiders, however he has had injury issues
which have problems not helped.
The ideology seems to be younger modern era official going
forward, with a splash of diversity.
Graham Scott will most likely be leaving at the end of the
season, he’s only done 2 PL games all season.
Josh Smith and Sam Barrott to be promoted to SG1.
I would be very surprised if Lewis Smith made it too this
season, although unexpected things have happened.

Lewis smith needs to be stronger this week, no hiding ground for
him !!! He needs to deal with time wasting / and add the
appropriate pl added time on for it …6/7 minutes… Also he needs
to jump on the mandatory cards for tackles early snd set his
stall out from the off !!

Burnley have had

Josh Smith once
Welch once
Lewis Smith once

Is this really fair?

Would you prefer appointments to be made by a random draw to
make it fairer? With the greatest of respect to Burnley, games
involving teams near the bottom of the table in the first half
of the season are unlikely to register as potentially
troublesome in the eyes of the appointments people so you can
hardly expect to have a non-stop conveyor of FIFA referees in
charge. Were these seven games refereed worse than all their
others?
