You mean to say that Alan Wiley has been partly responsible for
selecting that surfeit of dross which comprises most of SG2. I'm
afraid he's fallen a fair way in my estimation.

He may not have been involved in the selection but just chosen
for the task of making bricks without straw.

Or conversely the dross he has been forced to work with are
       beyond even Wiley’s magical powers?

Alan Wiley was a referee who I much admired but his promotion
       opportunities suffered, particularly internationally, through
coming on the scene late. I can remember seeing him a few times
in his West Midlands league days and thinking that he was one
who would almost certainly make it on to the League list and
when he did, he soon made his mark and became one of the safest
pairs of hands on the SG.
I have no reason at all to doubt that he isn't doing just as
well in his present role with SG2 but we do need to be careful
and not assume that just because someone has been a very fine
referee, they are going to be as good at managing and/or
coaching others in that job. I am sure many of us have seen
people in all sorts of walks of life where someone good at his
or her job has been promoted as a result into a managerial or
supervisory role which has turned out to be disastrous and way
above their level of competence. The skills and requirements of
such a role are often quite different and for which some people
simply don't have the aptitude and/or for which they receive
inadequate training. A big problem is that, quite often, those
that do the promoting are themselves in a job for which they are
not sufficiently trained, well suited or equipped!

Watching the EFL highlights on Quest it appears that Anthony
Backhouse has had another appearance in the Championship
replacing Andy Madley at some point during today's match at
       Middlesbrough.
