Interesting day for Tom Parsons and team at Walsall v Mansfield
on Saturday.
A very good performance IMO for 99% of the game however (as
usual!) the 1% was fairly controversial with a ball over/not
over the line debate. You may have since seen Mansfield manger
Nigel Clough talking about it and calling for goalline
technology in the whole of the EFL.
From what I have seen, he made the case for it rationally and
appeared more aggrieved with his sides failure to take their
many chances in the game rather than with the officials on the
day not awarding the goal, which is to his credit. To add to
that, you could also credit Mansfield's players as they didn't
carry any protests on and the temperature of the game didn't
escalate. Maybe as the incident was in front of the Walsall
fans, and if it was at the other end maybe it would have been
different, we'll never know.
For a little context, it was first half, 0-0 at the time, and
from an inswinging free kick to the back post the Mansfield
number 14 (Flint), in very close proximity to a Walsall
defender, the goalkeeper and the post, appeared, from some
photos, to bundle the ball over the line.
Now, from the photo on this link to the BBC piece, you can see
(a) how close it was, and (b) the position of the AR in relation
to the ball and bodies potentially blocking his sight. Now I'm
not sure how any AR could be 100% sure from that angle, in that
sight line, that all of the ball is over all of the line?

The AR has no view, so would be guessing.
The picture is not conclusive. If you asked me to bet a spare
£5, I'd say it was a goal ...... but if it was my last £5 it
would stay in my pocket.
As for goal-line technology throughout the Football League,
there is money in the game to do this - but would the clubs want
it diverted from players' wages to pay for it?

Eventful evening for Sam Purkiss and team at Stadium MK. Two red
cards, including a straight red for dissent for Dean Lewington.
There was also a very close goal line decision for an MK goal,
appears to be over the line on replays but wasn’t given by
Daniel D’Urso. MK were outraged, the AR would have had an
unblocked view but it was a case of millimetres I would think.

The clubs might. The players wouldn't.
