       Luton v Sheff Utd - Kavanagh/Tierney
   DIR By: Craven

Only seen the highlights of this game, so can’t comment on the
overall performance. The two penalties for handball though, what
was Tierney thinking? I genuinely can’t fathom how he has come
to the conclusion that they are pens. What has happened to
‘clear and obvious’? If neither of those pens had been given, no
one would have batted an eyelid. They are so obscure, I honestly
believe they wouldn’t have made the highlights reel.
The second one especially, awarded to Luton, is an abomination
       of a decision.
Although Tierney has to take the lion’s share of the blame, I
also think Kavanagh needs to accept some responsibility. I know
it’s difficult, but if I’m reffing that game, and get called
over to the monitor to watch the either of those incidents, I’m
100% saying ‘thanks, but no thanks’ I’m sticking with my
       original decision of no pen.
I’d love to hear Howard Webb’s thoughts on these. Hope they’re
included in the next edition of Mic’d Up.
       Utterly ridiculous decisions IMHO.

Get what you are saying but the Match Of The Day commentator
said it perfectly, in this day and age and how the law is
interpreted these days they are both penalties, I personally
wouldn't give them but how the laws are they are both penalties
Edited to fix the quote thingamajigga, bmb.

Poor interventions from Tierney once again, the second one
particularly is a comical referral to the screen.
Unfortunately Tierney has thrown Kavanagh under a bus because
once the first penalty is referred to the monitor and given, the
       second one will be too.
Consistent inconsistency from VAR once again.

In reply to MCPridz, even if they do fall under the stipulation
of the handball rule, which if I’m honest, I don’t think they
do, then they certainly don’t fall under the ‘clear and obvious
error’ bar, and just for that reason alone, there’s no way
Tierney should be intervening. My gut instinct is Howard Webb
will be fairly angry with both

I think the first one will be assessed as correct because the
hand is above the shoulder and it is a shot towards goal, I know
that's not really a consideration anymore but most people would
expect a penalty here. The second one is very doubtful however,
I think it was purely a consequence of the first one and that
Tierney felt he had to recommend that as he recommended the
first, but that's not the case in my opinion

Also to add, a good escape for Kavanagh in the second incident
would've been to give an attacking foul against Adebayo for his
hand to the back of the head of Vini Souza. Then he wouldn't
have to completely reject Tierney while still making a decision
       the players can likely accept

I was the same as you with just the highlights, so didn't want
to wade in first and putting the boot in, especially with
Fulham's history with Kavanagh, so waited to see what others
       thought.
However, as you and others have said, I too have no idea what
Tierney was thinking calling Kav over to the monitor. Were they
'clear and obvious' errors? Absolutely not! But again Kav hasn't
done himself any favours as still had the power to stick to his
original decisions. The only silver lining is that they balanced
out so had little bearing on the match. Not sure if Tierney felt
pressured to persuade Kav on the second award as he realised
he'd made such a clanger for the first? Not sure what the MOTD
       commentator was on about either!

Jonathan Pearce is one of the worst commentators around these
days. I rarely take notice of the drivel he spouts on matchday.

I watched the game in full - Kavanagh actually did a very good
job in this game, yet he’s going to be remembered for the two
interventions. Tierney in my opinion has thrown him under the
       bus.
I felt at the time, it was harsh, but certainly the Sheffield
Utd penalty was way more so than the Luton penalty. No one in
the crowd say anything, bar the latter incident for a few minor
shouts. None of the players appealed and were just carrying on
       regardless.
Rob Edwards seldom criticises referees - after the game he
classed it as a 2-0 defeat rather than 3-1 because of those
       decisions.
