Tranmere Rovers FC v Morecambe FC
       Referee: Speedie, Benjamin
       Assistant Referee: Woodward, Daniel
       Assistant Referee: Simpson, Joe
       Fourth Official: Joyce, Ross
7 YCs, 5 of which went to the home team, in a game which was
mostly played in good spirit felt excessive. Of those 5, 2 for
mis-timed challenges and one for a shirt-tug were
understandable, one against Morris was presumably for dissent
after the far-side AR Joe Simpson? flagged for a free-kick which
wasn't obvious. The last was for a Saunders challenge on the
Morecambe keeper who'd taken the ball out of the area seemed
harsh. One of the two YCs to Morecambe was for a blatant pull
back on Apter who'd broken free, can't recall the other. The
penalty award when Saunders was taken out running into the box
didn't merit a YC in Mr Speedie's view. A bit out of sync with
his general approach to card production in this game.
There was one situation where I felt he applied the rules
wrongly. Mr Speedie got in the way of a clearance from a
Morecambe player who was placed about 3' from the penalty area
when striking the ball and it deflected to a Tranmere player.
Correctly a drop ball to Morecambe, but the referee didn't drop
the ball where struck but took it right back to the penalty box,
so the keeper was able to kick back into the box, pick it up and
       take a long kick.
Overall would say it was an adequate performance from the
referee, no key errors, but I don't see much evidence of
instinct or empathy in his handling of either game I've seen Mr
       Speedie officiate in.

Neil Hair, Stockport v Crewe. That’s why you need an EFL referee
on 1st v 3rd. Neil went down injured during first half stoppage
time and had to be replaced by National League referee Richard
Eley. A young looking, pacy bloke, who to be fair, was quite
good but didn’t have to do much. I expect him to be in the EFL
soon. Not sure who it was but a bald headed bloke took over 4th
official duties in the 2nd half, maybe the observer? He seemed
to know what he was doing and was writing the stuff down on the
papers. Top of the league, you’re having a laugh!
       [/quote]
From your description it seems the appointed Coach on the game
stepped in as a replacement 4th official...Lee Mason!
An impressive rise for Mr Eley, who I watched give a very
competent performance at Blyth Spartans just after Christmas, so
I am pleased to hear it went well for him on his unexpected EFL
       refereeing debut.

I am delighted to hear that it went well for Richard whom I have
worked with in the recent past. However it does call into
question the appointing process. Last season he was a level
three, having been at that level for a number of years. He flew
through 2B very rapidly, being elevated to 2A in the recent
mid-season promotions, but has yet to make his bow in the
National League Premier. Should someone with that level of
experience really be appointed as fourth official to a top of
       the table League Two match?

Overall disappointed with Sam Allison at Fratton Park last
night. I appreciate it was what looked like a last minute switch
around but he never seemed to have a hold on the game at all.
Correct penalty call at the end of the first half - other than
that, pretty much every corner/GK/throw was guessed and
decisions seemed to take a while. I highly doubt the Cambridge
goal was over the line albeit that's not really his shout to
       make.
Yes, they're small things in the context of the outcome of the
game (thankfully if you're a Pompey fan!) - but he is nowhere
near the quality nor has the conviction that SG1 demands of a
referee. Call it fast-track, call it whatever...he has the
talent, pace and positioning of a standard NL official. This has
been the case every time I've seen him live.

An interesting evening of football, with some eyecatching
scorelines! Hopefully Neil Hair isn’t out of action for too
       long.
Sounds like an unavoidable scenario for Carl Brook and team last
night, some late afternoon rain on an already battered and
bruised pitch. No blame on the officials, my club need to look
into the cause of the poor conditions (our former manager
actually came out recently and said he accepted the role on the
basis the pitch is improved!). As always, feel for the
travelling fans though, but just one of those things.

Far more likely, observers are told not to take over from
       injured officials.
