I get that, but in the Crawley v Walsall case it seems very
unlikely.
I would imagine a relatively small home crowd plus around 200
away fans, no rivalry or history between the teams and no
flashpoints at all in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
In fact, this would have made an ideal game for a trial referee
rather than the strange looking SG2 appointment!
Saying all that, you watch them prove me completely wrong now
and there be 5 red cards and mass brawl or something!!

Rovers also got Mr Busby for our trip
to Doncaster. Again on the face of it not a game calling for an
SG2 official. Wonder has he done many SG2 games recently if been
absent for a while might be easing back.
On what I’ve seen of him in action can’t imagine a glut of RCs.

An ok performance from Mr Coy today. Our #21 got booked in the
first half for a bad challenge from my angle, and some may argue
a red card. However, when that tackle happened at least 6
Crawley players surrounded Martin and not one of them was
booked. He never got to grips to Crawley’s time wasting when it
was 0-0 (pretty embarrassing) and finally booked the keeper
early second half. Constantly wasting time so a booking was
deserved. Meanwhile, Crewe had 3 subs waiting for around 2
minutes, and when the time came for them to come on, Steven
Plane didn’t even have the board ready!! I don’t get what he was
doing as he had plenty of time to put the numbers on the board.
3 and 6 mins added both fair.

I have deliberately waited until Monday to post this hoping that
I can be more objective than I would have been on Saturday
evening. The first thing to say is that Mr Bourne got the major
decisions correct (including wearing blue when another bright
colour would have been an option) and was not responsible for
the outcome of the match. I know that Stanley have had a
reputation for being masters of the dark arts. Whether deserved
or undeserved, I do not think that applicable to the current
young team who are guilty of naivety if anything, which may have
led to the foul count being 25-7 and 6 yellow cards to one. All
I can say is that it just didn't feel right and that whenever
two opposing players came into a tackle you knew that the
outcome was going to be a free kick to MK. On at least 4
occasions I would have given the free kick the other way. In
terms of the yellow cards I have no problem with 3 of them for
Stanley or the one which MK received but 2 of the others were
for what appeared to be fairly inoccuous tackles in midfield.
One could have been for persistent infringement although there
was no indication of this whilst the other was a recently
introduced sub's first tackle. Maybe if I could watch the match
again closer to the action I might have a different view. The
big talking point came on 90 minutes when the Stanley winger got
past the MK full back with clear space ahead of him and was
pulled down. Mr Bourne was 20 or 30 yards away and ran across
pulling the yellow card out of his pocket for what everyone
assumed would be a yellow card for the full back. Instead, he
booked the Stanley player. It can't have been for dissent from
that distance so something must have happened that I didn't see.
My initial thought was diving but the free kick was awarded. The
MK full back was never spoken to for what I considered the
clearest yellow card of the match.
One further point. A player goes down with a serious leg injury
on the half way line on the edge of the centre circle on the
opposite side of the pitch to the tunnel. He clearly can't
continue and a substitution is made but whilst all other
substitutuions are made with the players leaving the pitch at
the tunnel entrance, the injured player is made to leave the
pitch at the nearest point and limp all the way round it to get
back to the dressing room and treatment. Just seemed cruel!
Not the greatest game being far too stop start for a match that
could nowhere near be described as dirty. I hope it was an off
day for Mr Bourne but I'd be quite pleased not to encounter him
again for a while.

Mixed afternoon for Lee Swabey at Walsall v Newport, whilst not
having an impact on the result he was very inconsistent, mainly
around foul detection/decisions, with players and the crowd
unsure at times whether he would blow immediately for a FK,
allow play to run for a couple of seconds then bring it back for
the FK, or not give anything at all.
A very stop start game, not allowed to flow at all, not helped
by Lee allowing the usual game management tactics from a team
in the lead, not that Newport needed to, as they were in an
unassailable 3-0 lead after 35 mins!
Some stats sites saying there were 27 fouls in the game and not
a yellow card given for a foul, must be some sort of record!?
The only card issued was a very late red card for Walsall's
keeper I thought was possibly harsh. No disputing it was an
intentional handball outside the area (correctly flagged for by
AR1), however I'd debate it was a goalscoring opportunity if he
hadn't handballed it, let alone an obvious one. Apathy had long
since set in with the home fans to be too aggrieved though!!

Games at Colchester and Burton have also bitten the dust due to
the weather.
That’s two home games on the bounce that have been rained off at
Burton as well..

Neil Hair, Stockport v Crewe. That’s why you need an EFL referee
on 1st v 3rd. Neil went down injured during first half stoppage
time and had to be replaced by National League referee Richard
Eley. A young looking, pacy bloke, who to be fair, was quite
good but didn’t have to do much. I expect him to be in the EFL
soon. Not sure who it was but a bald headed bloke took over 4th
official duties in the 2nd half, maybe the observer? He seemed
to know what he was doing and was writing the stuff down on the
papers. Top of the league, you’re having a laugh!

Well if John Busby is the general standard of SG2 then I'll
happily settle for our usual selection of EFL newbies and
triallists in the future thank you very much.
He has had a shockingly poor performance in the Crawley v
Walsall game. From letting virtually anything and everything go
in the first 15-20 mins without giving a free kick, to giving
FKs and waving yellow cards at almost any challenge for the rest
of the first half...except the clearest YC would have been for a
trip by a Crawley defender when he gave the Walsall penalty,
which would 99/100 be a YC anywhere else on the pitch, and which
conveniently would have been that defender's second yellow.
Onto the second half where he again lets all sorts of blocks and
niggly challenges go until he then starts blowing up again for
anything. Gives a YC to the Walsall GK for "time wasting" when
he is clearly waiting for a signal to re-start after a
substitution.
Into injury time and as Walsall clear a corner and break away
over the half way line, he then blows to stop the game for a
Crawley defender lying injured 40 yards back, in the Walsall
penalty area with what was clearly not, and never looked like it
was, either a serious injury nor a head injury. Game stops,
Crawley player jumps up and slowly walks off to the sideline
knowing he successfully conned the referee into stopping the
game and the opposition attack.
He genuinely looked out of place in a mid table League 2 game, I
shudder to think of the effect he could have on an SG2 game of
any importance.
I can now fully understand the rise of the likes of Barrott,
Allison, Welch, J.Smith, L.Smith et al virtually straight
through SG2 as after seeing all of those on their way up, they
are head and shoulders above some of the referees
promoted/getting SG2 games in the last couple of years like
Busby, Nield, Donohue etc.
