Managers of every club repeatedly bang on that they want
consistency from referees. You aren't going to get that if each
referee has a different style, so yes, refereeing development
for many years now has been based on getting referees to operate
a certain way and it will produce officials with very similar
refereeing styles. Football has got what football asked for.

Irrespective of any natural refereeing ability, once you come
under the PGMOL (either a 2b referee or Step 1 assistant) you
will to a degree become a manufactured official. The directives
in place this season are a key indicator along side the ERDP
which exists to emulate the life of a full time professional
Premier League official.

This is an astute observation and it's something which is
happening in many walks of life. Certainly my own field there
are nowhere near as many 'characters' as there used to be and
the ones that are still about don't tend to get promoted.
Calling it consistency or blandness depends on one's personal
view. I tend to the latter.

?" ( as opposed to a "natural" one. ) It's a very good question
to ask but not a particularly easy one to answer. I have been
giving it a little thought. I would say it can be found in the
two words 'empathy' and 'instinct'. A manufactured referee stays
somewhat aloof from the rhythm and ebb and flow of the match.
Every decision is given on its face value merits rather than in
context. A natural referee is part of the warp and weft of the
match, instinctively understanding its rhythms and refereeing
accordingly. So a natural referee gives an organic performance
whereas a manufactured referee officiates solely in terms of a
code which is consistent or unyielding ( depending on your point
of view in these matters )
