Ed Duckworth - Charlton v Derby

Mr Duckworth's manner and features immediately put me in mind of
someone from the silver screen. After a little thought it became
clear, the actor Anthony Perkins. So was this a Psycho of a
performance ? No, not at all, in fact I find it quite hard to
say much very positive or very negative. It is plain to see that
Mr Duckworth is a 'manufactured' rather than 'natural' referee.
He officiated in a very safe manner giving lots of free kicks
for things which a more experienced and confident referee might
have let go. Hence the match was rather stop start. He made no
huge errors but neither did he execute any great pieces of
officiating. He is a tidy and rather spare person and his
officiating was of that manner also. The cautions were pretty
nailed on. My chief criticism is that he didn't really allow the
game to breathe and it wasn't a dirty match so I think he could
have shown more discretion. Perhaps this will come with
experience. The players and management shook his hand warmly
enough at the conclusion.
One habit is to bring his arm very crisply and swiftly back to
his side after he has indicated a free kick or throw in. I have
always found this slightly military practice extremely
irritating but there are others ( Mr Duckworth included
presumably ) who find it smart and snappy. It isn't !
So I can find no particular fault with Mr Duckworth but neither
can I find much for which to praise him. The acid test perhaps
is that I wouldn't particularly relish seeing him again at any
football ground or indeed at Bates Motel !

Kevin Friend, Keith Stroud and Stephen Martin are chief
offenders when it comes to the arm gestures that is portrayed in
the comment above.

Agree with the stop/start on the game, but no complaints on this

I haven't seen any footage of this game and have only seen Mr
Duckworth in action once this season; did better than I
expected, but that was in the context of some of the negativity
here on his elevation to the FL list.
My query is exactly how do you define a "manufactured referee"?
It's clear from googling some of the links about him and his
cricketing sister, which TTJs previous post alerted me to, that
Mr Duckworth has refereeing since his schooldays, so has been
involved in the game for a good time.
Also curious how different things irritate different people.
I've never particularly noticed the military arm movement from
the two more experienced officials mentioned, but can't say it
would trouble me at all.

If anyone ever meet him, he is warm person which some would like
but others won't. The way he talked about the technical aspect
of football, you could easily mistaken him for a football Coach
rather than a Referee.

Well it's often said that the person who has no enemies has no
friends. Mr Duckworth has a pleasant smile which he deployed on
occasions during the match. It doesn't surprise me what you have
written; there was something very "technical" about his
performance; perhaps that is a better word that manufactured.

For a former RDO (Cheshire FA) he is quite a nice guy! However
his refereeing is certainly out of the FA by the book book,
which makes manufactured referee fairly accurate (and this from
a guy who has been on his line)

It is possible as a manufactured Referee (I love that
description...it covers so many of the points I don't feel
literate enough to make) his tenure at 2A where, IMO, you need
to be more than a ticker of Observer's boxes, may have painted
him in a slightly less positive light than was entirely fair.
That being said he was ENTIRELY abject in the National League
according to fans of every club I've spoken to.
Maybe (sadly) we need to get used to the off the shelf Referees
the FA seem to want with no characters or empathy for the game
taking place in front of them
