       Crystal Palace V Sheffield United

Slightly odd post-match comments by Chris Wilder. He said he
went to speak to the referee after the match as he was unhappy
with his performance. He accused one of the assistants of
showing a lack of respect by eating a sandwich - Wilder's
comment of 'hopefully he enjoyed eating a sandwich whilst
talking to a Premier League manager' seemed especially strange
and some might say a bit 'Do you know who I am?' sort of vibe.

I read that as the assistant had been eating a sandwich during
       the match
But seriously are they not allowed to have a snack post match

On face value it does seem a ludicrous comment by Wilder.
Presumably this encounter took place in the Match Officials
changing room where food is often provided by the Home club.
Wilder has never struck me as being a 'precious' type and
personally I can't see anything wrong with the Assistant's
conduct. It may be that he has been advised, on dietary and
health grounds, to take carbohydrate soon after a prolonged bout
       of exercise.
I guess Wilder is just in a strop and scattering his criticism
of the Match Officials far and wide.

Sounds like a previous occupant of the Sheffield United
management position! Things never change there!

If i knocked on someones door to want to speak with them and
they invited me in but they were eating at the time, then out of
politeness i would have waited until they finished eating before
starting my discussion or said i will come back in a few mins if
       you are eating.

Recalling that great story attributed to referee John Key who
having just ticked off a senior player was asked by said player
in high dudgeon " do you know who I am ?" at which point Key
called over to one of his team mates " tell the b*gger who he
is, he's forgotten " I can't remember who the player was but
someone here on RTR will know. Such are the delicate and attuned
sensitivities in the modern game that Key would probably be
reported and get into trouble now.

The rantings of a man who knows his team are doomed, along with
probably his job prospects, and he is just looking for someone
       else to blame. Pathetic really.

I heard a similar version of this story, when Brian Robson -
during the game - asked John Key if he "knew who he was". Key
summoned the Manchester United physio onto the field and and
said he should remove Robson as he was clearly suffering from
       amnesia!!

The more access that people are given to referees the more they
will find to complain about. If he hadn’t been allowed to go
into the room this incident would never have happened. If he
wasn’t allowed in he’d be moaning about not being allowed in, he
was allowed in and he’s moaning because he didn’t like what he
       saw.
My point being that when it comes to referees people will almost
always moan so why do “we” bother! There’s the ongoing debate
about referees in press conferences, about having even more
access to VAR discussion’s…the more you give people the more
they will have to pick at and that’s exactly what they will do.
I’d prefer to see the attitude coming from the top this is what
we’re doing take it or leave it, we’re not going to explain
everything. Of course people would bleat like crazy but that’s
happening anyway so what’s the difference.

The fact that Chris Wilde feels he has the right to go into the
match officials dressing room to complain about the referee's
performance is sad enough. Are his team's supporters afforded
the same opportunity when they do not win?
He also sarcastically said that he hoped that the Assistant
Referee had: "Enjoyed his sandwich while speaking to a Premier
League Manager". This prompts a number of thoughts:
~ My guess is that the said Assistant Referee has spoken to a
number of Premier League Managers on numerous occasions. This
interaction is unlikely to feature as one of life's standout
       memories.
~ Every well brought up person was taught no to speak with
one's mouth full - I would be astonished if this Assistant
       Referee is an exception.
~ This is another example of a manager deflecting criticism
from how the team that he selected, coached and directed played
       - the media stooges always fall for it because they do not want
to upset the very people that fill up their sports news
programmes, newspaper columns, etc. by asking them the difficult
       questions.
