S A HOOPER - Fulham v Liverpool (EFL)

A decent performance from Hooper tonight. The only clanger was
booking Cairney for a challenge that seemed good and fair.
A mention for the assistants too who didn’t miss a trick tonight
and who were spot on with all the offside calls.

How refreshing to see Simon Hooper's performance last night
without the added pressure of VAR. I also watched John Brooks on
Tuesday and Josh Smith on Monday; all 3 games were refereed
without fuss and none of them courted any controversy from what
were, 3 big games. We may think they got an odd decision wrong
but nobody is talking about the referees from any of the games.

I largely agree with TTFL, in that the only noticeable error was
the foul and YC against Cairney and if anything, it was a foul
by McAllister. I did think a couple of Liverpool challenges
escaped YCs, but otherwise an excellent performance by Hooper
and his ARs.

I also enjoyed Simon Hooper's performance although I differ with
previous correspondents over Cairney's caution, which I thought
was correct. The ball was there to be won by both players but
Cairney went off his feet making contact with Alexis Mac
Allister inevitable and was therefore reckless. My one
criticism was over his failure to caution Andreas Pereira for a
clear display of dissent.

The Cairney incident I felt was wrong as did one of the
commentators but what struck me was the way Hooper defended it,
confident that he got it right. I went to sleep after that but
there does appear to be a disconnect between what is a
cautionable offence and what isn't. I did feel it was an
instinctive challenge and was in no way reckless in the sense of
being deliberate or a conscious act but I understand Ref
Watcher's opinion which leaves me clueless as to what is and
isn't a YC offence. I guess if you go off your feet in any
challenge you are liable to sanction just as if when you raise
your arms (in case the ball hits them).
