having!

I note that Bramall has a middle on Tuesday having refereed
yesterday at West Brom.

Credit to Webb. The appointments this year are a breath of fresh
air after Hackett and to an extent Riley. Hackett, for all his
bluster, was dreadful at forward planning and getting fresh
blood into PL, hence why we ended up with 6 FIFA refs at one
point and very few refs were ever given big games, leading to
problems when they finished.
Webb is clearly really trying to forward plan and spread
experience around the group. Although you have to expect that,
if you give people a go, it can occasionally backfire, it hasn’t
so far and it’s for THE GREATER GOOD of not over using certain
refs and thinking of the future/injuries.

Look where "the greater good" took Simon Pegg in " Hot Fuzz". Be
careful what you wish for! 😄

I watched most of the Villa v Newcastle game on TNT and thought
John Brooks had a very good game. Firm but fair was how I saw it
and yellow cards seemed correct. One flag for offside from Akil
Howson seemed mighty early in the present-day circumstances with
VAR, and I was a bit surprised that John went along with it and
pulled play up immediately. It was probably as well that
Howson's flag proved correct...just. A 2nd goal for Villa was
ruled out for offside and VAR confirmed the decision after a
lengthy delay which seemed right.... again just. Good to see 9
minutes added time at the end in view of the stoppages in the
2nd half. A good night for John in my view.

I'd agree with all of that. I can only deem the early flag by AH
as a lapse in concentration. Not sure how many he has done with
VAR but it is obviously still fairly new to him.
A tough spot for the referee but ultimately I also feel he
should have let it carry on, albeit throwing AH under the bus so
to speak who would have been standing statue like as play
carried on. Given VAR could then review the whole play though,
the correct thing to do in law/procedurally.

Hackett stunted the development of officials when he had his
grubby mittens on the PGMOL, yet he has the perverse knack of
making ridiculous comments on the current group who he claims
aren’t fit.
As Clattenburg said when he jumped ship, the SG1 under Hackett
was too old, knackered and performing poorly.
Fast forward to today, we have got at least 10-15 of the current
SG1 who would be able to handle the big matches, and they are
now being shared around.
If we didn’t have those options now, and given Oliver has been
missing for over a month, things would have been very tricky.
