Not convinced that fell into the category of clear and obvious
myself. I understand the ruling out from the point of view of
the player in the keepers way/obstructing him, whatever the
current correct term is but is it really clear & obvious? I
will say his signalling was good and I'm pleased to see he went
& reviewed it himself because it should, imo, be his decision
and his alone.

The introduction of VAR is the best case yet for getting rid of
the offside Law.
All the players in this case accepted that it was a goal,
including Courtois who made the mistake and, in doing so, this
made the Ajax player onside, although he came back to head the
ball from an offside position. It also appeared that the onfield
officials were happy until outside interference took control.

It's offside. The player in the offside position clearly
interferes with an opponent. Almost impossible to judge at full
speed. This is what VAR is for and what VAR should be
intervening on. Good to see it being used correctly IMO.

That's fair enough & I don't disagree. It was the correct
decision. What confuses me is the "clear & obvious" directive.
If it's impossible to judge at full speed, which again I agree
it was, where does clear & obvious come into it? He could not
have been expected to get that right in real time.

That's fair enough & I don't disagree. It was the correct
decision. What confuses me is the "clear & obvious" directive.
If it's impossible to judge at full speed, which again I agree
it was, where does clear & obvious come into it? He could not
have been expected to get that right in real time.

'Clear and obvious does not take into account the extent to
which referee would be expected to have got the decision correct
without video replays - it is there to get the correct decision
rather than to judge the quality of the initial decision.
If the replay indicates that the wrong decision has clearly been
made (in relation to a reviewable incident) then the decision
should be changed, regardless if it was a massive error by the
referee not to spot something that was right under his nose or
if he he didn't have a chance of spotting it in real time.

Yes, although I think it was a bit more subjective in this case,
hence the referee going to look for himself.
