2026 world cup

According to Law5 Seville has hosted a seminar for European
referees eligible for the 2026 World Cup in USA, interestingly
neither Taylor or Oliver were there. I assume Taylor will be too
old, not sure about Oliver.

Michael Oliver would only be 41, so I'd be very surprised if
that is correct. Arthur Dias will be 47 during the tournament,
Clement Turpin 44, Danny Makkelie 43, Felix Zwayer 45, and so
on. Tess Olofsson, unless I am missing something obvious,
hasn't refereed any male international games, so a bit of a
stretch to think she will be refereeing WC games.

It is strange to see Oliver missing from the list. He hasn’t
fulfilled an appointment for a while so I wonder if the reason
could be linked.

Quite a surprising lineup a bit of experience in there but on
paper not a very strong lineup Oliver’s exclusion and Tess
Olofsson inclusion are the most obvious standouts

Interestingly all Elite group apart from Pinheiro, Mariani,
Frappart (all First group). Olofsson not on the UEFA mens list
in any category, yet several other female officials in the
Second group if that's the route they wanted to take, which
makes it a bit odd.

Very disappointing not to see any referees from any of the Home
Nations there. I imagine Oliver must be a strong contender to be
on the Referees Panel for 2026 so his absence from that list is
most probably tied in with his present sabbatical from PL
appointments.
Looking to 2030, which seems a long way away but of course is
only six years, I imagine it will be Brooks and Barrott carrying
English refereeing hopes and perhaps Jones but I am much less
confident about his inclusion.

In July 2026 Anthony Taylor will be 47. As he would have been on
this list were it not for another long standing commitment, am I
right to presume that either a) there is no retirement age for
FIFA referees or b) it is more than 47 years old ? Could
someone confirm please. Somewhere in the back of my mind I had
it that FIFA retirement age was 45 but that is probably outdated
information.

The retirement age for FIFA referees used to be 50 - in the 1990
World Cup Finals George Courtney (b1941) was the oldest referee.
From 1991 the age limit was reduced to 45, reportedly on the
grounds that older referees tended to be more (too!) permissive
than younger ones. In the recesses of my unreliable mind, I
think that this came after an over-lenient display by Erik
Fredriksson, who was 47 at the time.
The regulations were modified a decade ago, so that referees
could continue on the list, if nominated by their national
association, subject to yearly medical, fitness and performance
criteria. Daniele Orsato, for example, is already 48.
