Everton v Aston Villa: David Coote

Var in the news yet again for the wrong reasons, a 4 minute
offside check. And I have to say, as much as I think that Jamie
Redknapp is absolutely clueless, he makes a great point that if
Mr Tierney had used his common sense he could've saved
everyone's time in regards to this: [attach=1]

They would still need to check the offside considering the foul
is a subjective matter and Coote could reject it at the monitor,
at least in theory. But the process could still have been
faster, because they continued to check something even after the
factual offside was confirmed, which is obviously not necessary

Difficult to blame the officials here, if they had put
semi-automated VAR in this would have been completed in a
fraction of the time it took. For reasons that no one seems to
know the Premier League managers rejected it.

Something to do with the sensor in the ball only working in
adidas balls and the PL using nike. At least that's a part of
       it.

Interestingly either next season or the season after, Nike will
no longer be the supplier after the Premier League decided to
break away. Maybe this is a step towards the new technology,
especially if Adidas is chosen as the new supplier.

Sticking my head above the parapet, I thought Coote did OK
       overall.
The game looked like it was going to boil over at one stage, but
he stayed calm and collected and things died down. Several
subjective decisions throughout the match, but not too much
clear and obvious errors. Tarkowski someone fortunate perhaps.

I believe Puma have already been announced as the new ball
       supplier.

I would agree with you takethejag, think Tarkowski was at it all
game, niggly things to break up the game and get in the faces of
the opponent which villa fell for like they did at Brentford.
There was a possibility of two fouls on Diaby in the same move
in the penalty area, one of which he might have got if he had
gone down. Similar decisions have been given by other referees
in recent games. The second was the follow through by Tarkowski
after his tackle in yhe penalty area.
Some you get some you dont.
Why var took nearly four minutes to give offside on review for
the ‘goal’ villa scored i will never know. I assume the var was
looking at different pictures to the tv coverage, if not why
keep looking at the game after Bailey was adjudged offside? I
didnt see anything to warrant a SFP check.

The thing with an "offside position" VAR check is that it is a
       matter of fact.
The question is do you want that fact to be correctly determined
       - however long it takes - or are you prepared to "go with the
original decision" once a certain time limit has been reached
       (30 / 60 / 90 seconds) ??
I am absolutely certain that - if we were to go don the time
limit route - there would be outcry at the first incorrect
decision that could have been corrected had there been more time
       allowed.
Boris Johnson was one quoted as being "fully in favour of having
cake and eating it". In that case, he should have been a
professional footballer, manager, coach or pundit (actually that
is a much better idea than him ever going into politics!).
